UK-based university seeks companies with expertise in medical device development to help produce protoype diagnostic device

Country of Origin: United Kingdom
Reference Number: TRUK20170731002
Publication Date: 31 July 2017

Summary

A UK university has developed a novel thermal detection platform technology with potential for development as a portable point of care diagnostic device. They are looking for industrial partners with expertise and experience in the medical device and diagnostics space to help them develop the technology from laboratory proof of concept to prototype. It is envisaged that the partnership will take the form of research cooperation agreements or technical cooperation agreements.

Description

Biomarkers are a powerful tool in medical diagnostics. However many of them require labels in order to be detected or otherwise require detection methods that reduce the possibility of integration into a compact and portable biosensor setup. This limits their use especially in point of care diagnostics.

A UK university has developed a heat transfer method of detection. This has enabled them to develop a thermal detection platform technology that has the potential to overcome this liability and produce a flexible, point of care diagnostic device.

This thermal detection platform technology is based on analysing the heat-transfer resistance of a functionalized solid–liquid interface in time. Changes in thermal resistance caused by the presence of different molecules gives the output reading. This thermal detection platform technology has been combined with various synthetic and natural receptors for various applications including the detection of whole cells and microorganisms, neurotransmitters and hormones, and proteins using surface imprinted polymers (SIPs), molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), and aptamers, respectively.

The UK university is looking to further develop this platform from a bench-top proof of concept model to a prototype device. They are looking for industrial partners with experience and expertise in the development and prototyping of medical devices, especially diagnostic devices, to help them with this process. It is envisaged that this partnership will take the form of a research cooperation agreement or a technical cooperation agreement.

Expertise sought

The UK university is looking for partner companies that have experience and expertise in the development of medical device technology from laboratory proof of concept to the prototype stage.

In particular the partner company should have experience of developing new diagnostic technologies. They should also have experience of the regulatory requirements in key potential markets such as the EU and US to help guide the university in regards to further development.

Requested partner

The UK university is looking for companies that have expertise and a track record in the development of medical diagnostic devices to help them in the prototype development of their thermal detection platform technology. The company would be expected to work with the university on the design and development of prototypes based on the university's thermal detection platform technology. This will enable the university to further develop this technology and the company to further develop its capabilities in a new technology area.

It is envisaged that the partnership will take the form of a research cooperation agreement or a technical cooperation agreement.
