Innovation & Technologie Anfrage

Dutch multinational seeks new materials and applications for their inkjet technology in the frame of a technical cooperation agreement.

Country of Origin: Netherlands
Reference Number: TRNL20191010001
Publication Date: 10 October 2019

Summary

A Dutch multinational is specialized in developing inkjet technologies for digital imaging and printing services. The company is looking for partners that can help them in finding totally new applications and products that can be made by using their developed high-tech print heads. Cooperation with partners is envisaged under a technical cooperation agreement. This profile is part of an open innovation challenge.

Description

The Dutch company is a leading player in the global field of inkjet technologies. Their high-tech piezo-electric print heads are able to print on various kind of surfaces and substrates, ranging from classical paper to glass, ceramic (tiles) and wood. The printing is done by jetting very small droplets of ink (or any other suitable substance) onto one of the above mentioned substrates with a very high accuracy. The droplet size of the jetted ink ranges from 10 to 30 picoliter (a picoliter is a billionth of a microliter) leading to a resolution of the printed image of 150 nozzle per inch (npi). The company can print materials with a viscosity up to 15-20 centipoise (or mPAs – milliPascalseconds). By heating the printable material the viscosity can be lowered. The company’s print heads can handle temperatures up to 130 degrees centigrade, which is unique. On average inkjet print heads can be heated to only max 80 degrees.

With their ‘elevated printing’ technology the company can even stack multiple layers of ink on top of each other. This technology is used to create accurate reproductions of the world's greatest historical paintings, including details of texture and relief.

Because the Dutch company has a strong focus on the commercial printing market, they lack sufficient knowledge of other markets and industries to identify other opportunities for their jetting technology. At the same time they are convinced there are numerous other possibilities for printing materials such as printing food, medicines or electronics just to name a few.

Therefor the company is looking for new partners to bring in their knowledge and expertise to create new business opportunities for both and expand their businesses into new markets and applications. The Dutch company is looking for a technical cooperation agreement with companies that already have or are developing jettable materials that can be used to add functionality to existing or new products.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This technology request is part of an innovation challenge and is published on an open innovation platform from the 23rd of September until the 4th of November 2019. If an organisation does express interest in cooperation with this firm before closing date, it will be guided towards this open innovation platform on which one can get in direct contact with the company experts. Mind that posts on this platform are not confidential. Beside open discussions on the platform, sharing of confidential information will be made possible on demand. After that, the Dutch company will select the SME's with whom they would like to
cooperate in the development of a solution. Once the challenge is closed, EOI's for this technology request will be treated in the traditional way.

Expertise sought

The Dutch company is looking for partners with expertise on printable or jettable materials or who have developed such materials with a viscosity up to 15-20 centipoise (equal to 15-20 mPAs – milliPascalseconds). However, the viscosity can be lowered as printing operating temperatures can rise up to 130 degrees centigrade, depending on the printable material.

Requested partner

The Dutch company is looking for a technical cooperation agreement with companies that have innovative ideas, solutions and applications in the area of jetting liquids and other materials in all kinds of industrial applications. Especially for applications where jetting with high temperatures of up to 130 degrees and/or a 100% accuracy is a necessity.

Companies that are already producing jettable materials which can be used to add functionality to existing or new products, for example by jetting materials in or onto these products, are invited to response. Also system integrators that build machines for these types of applications are welcome to join.
