Summary

An international research facility based in Switzerland is looking for companies able to manufacture cold bore tubes up to 13.5m with an inner diameter from 79.8mm to 137.2mm and outer from 85mm to 145.2mm. The cold bores shall be precision-machined from stainless steel billets supplied by the research facility, and provided following a manufacturing agreement with the partner sought.

Description

An international research facility based in Switzerland is looking for companies able to manufacture cold bore tubes. 

The research centre's first goal is to study particles interaction. Studying particles colliding at very high speed, physicists and engineers can get meaningful insights into the fundamental laws of nature.



To make particles collide at such high speeds, special infrastructure is necessary, to accelerate and guide particles, to cool the tubes in which the particles are travelling, and to detect the particles during and after collisions.



In the frame of one of these projects, the research facility needs around 80 cold bore tubes to separate vacuum (inside the tubes) from surrounding supercooling fluid. The exact dimensions of the tubes are specified in the next section and are to be drilled and honed (if required) starting from raw material provided by the research centre in the form of solution annealed billets in EN 1.4429 grade austenitic stainless steel with diameters of 160 and 120mm. 



The research centre is looking for manufacturing agreements with companies capable of supplying the parts respecting the given requirements. The ability to manufacture such long and precise tubes is uncommon and the research centre is very interested in getting in touch with companies with such capabilities also for possible further projects.

Figure 1 is an illustration of the tubes dimensions with additional specs on tolerance and surface roughness (internal Ra 1.6).



The supply shall include the following deliverables and activities:

• Precision machining of the inner diameter;

• Precision machining of the outer diameter;

• Marking with a 19-digit part identifier;

• Testing according to a contract defined in a later stage;

• Packing;

• Technical documentation; 



The supply shall comply with the ISO 14253-1 standard.

Requested partner

The partner sought should be able to provide the following facilities and competencies for the execution of the contract:

• Deep drilling equipment with the required length;

• Honing equipment with the required length (if required for obtaining the specified surface roughness and inner diameter tolerance).



The tasks to be performed by the partner sought:

Manufacture (drilling, honing) and delivery of the parts following the requirements and the conditions in the manufacturing agreement (contract).
