Decision support system (DSS) for personalised skincare

Country of Origin: United Kingdom
Reference Number: TOUK20171024002
Publication Date: 24 October 2017

Summary

A UK mathematical modelling company has devised a new decision support system (DSS) for personalised skincare. The system uses skin measurements combined with information collected via questionnaire to distinguish different skin profiles and the optimal formulation of ingredients. They are seeking cosmetics companies to co-develop, optimize and expand their personalised skincare process via technical cooperation agreement.

Description

Cosmetic companies providing personalised skincare primarily create products based on questionnaires, sometimes in addition to other data, e.g., a DNA test.

The UK company has developed a DSS based on a self-learning algorithm, that can be used in addition to current processes by including consumer feedback.

The company is not aware of any cosmetics company that uses a system which attempts to improve the accuracy of the personalised formulation by utilising the feedback from the customers. The company has a concept to provide additional information, apart from the one obtained using questionnaires, which would help define the skin profile, without the need for sanding samples, e.g. DNA, or visiting a shop. It is straightforward and simple and is easy to implement into existing systems and once implemented would not increase the operational costs.

They are seeking cosmetics companies that are either wishing to implement a personalised skincare procedure or would like to work with the UK company to expand and improve their current process for optimal individualized products, via technical cooperation agreement.

Advantages and Innovations

The current systems used for personalised skincare, which are based on questionnaires, seem to be static, or, once created they do not seem to change. This is unfortunate as such a system does not benefit from the growing database which becomes available once the personalised skincare concept becomes operational.

The UK company's DSS is flexible and can be implemented for various concepts, whether based on determining the unique formulation for each skin profile, or, selecting one of the existing products from the shelf to suit the skin profile. A combination of these two approaches is also possible. However, one essential aspect is that the system which selects or determines the personalised products should be able to learn and provide higher accuracy of recommendations with time due to new data which is collected on skin profiles, products recommended and feedback obtained after the use of the recommended products. Such a system would have a higher rate of satisfied customers.

The personalized formulation for an existing customer whose skin profile has been previously determined may require periodical adjustments due to changes in the customers' skin profile caused by a health condition, ageing or seasonal changes. A static system would have difficulties to successfully adjust the product to the needs of the customers. Therefore, the proposed concept is essential for any cosmetics company which would be involved in personalised skincare.
