Description

The Institute established in 1929 is one of the oldest research institutions in Ukraine. Traditionally Institute is focused on fundamental research that is very necessary for the development of innovations. At the same time, applied research on cryogenics, LC displays, laser systems, pyroelectric detectors, biophysics, plasma, nanomaterials and nanotechnologies strengthen the Institute's activities. 
Now Institute is one of the Ukrainian leaders in the Research&Development of innovative, knowledge-intensive products. Its product portfolio spans the range of top-selling Cryogenic products, Laser Micromachining products, Low-Temperature Gas Plasma Sterilization products, Non-Contact Spectral-Ratio Pyrometers, Specialized Laser Application products, Nanocomposites etc.
Institute offers the technology of production of medical bandages for wounds treatment made of radiation cross-linked hydrogels.
The general scheme of manufacturing technology of bandages from radiation cross-linked hydro-gel is as follows. Initial polymer powders of several types are dissolved in water at high pressures and temperatures above 100C. The solution is them mixed in certain proportions and consistency. The resulting liquid hydrogel is poured into packages of foil-laminated polyethene, which are evacuated and sealed. With a special device, they are flattened to form a layer with uniform thickness. The flattened package is irradiated in the certain environment by a powerful beam of high-energy electrons, under the influence of which radiation stitching of hydrogel occurs, transforming the fluid in the jelly-bands. There is simultaneous sterilization of hydrogel along with the package to a surgical level (10^-6).

Advantages and Innovations

A bandage of radiation crosslinked hydrogel is the modern way to provide emergency aid for burns, bleeding and open pneumothorax (traumatic decompression of the chest). They are a flexible film thickness of 3-5 mm of a radiation-crosslinked hydro gel – transparent jelly-like sterile material that is 90% water. This is a 3-rd polymer network (sponge) with a size less than 1 μm, thus keeping the water, allowing the diffusion of solutions, but not transmitting the bacteria. Material is biologically compatible. Seals cool and heal the wound, maintaining a moist environment. Do not stick to wounds. It may contain pain relievers, antiseptic, blood stopping and other drugs. It is used to treat ulcers, bedsores and skin diseases in cosmetology. 
Advantages of a bandage are lower production costs and higher productivity.
