A small Slovak company is offering an external combustion steam engine with a rotating piston

Country of Origin: Slovakia
Reference Number: TOSK20160511001
Publication Date: 11 May 2016

Summary

A small Slovak company has developed and patented an external combustion steam engine with a rotating piston (Wankel type). It means that process of fuel burning is realized out off the engine and it doesn’t matter what kind of fuel is used to heat working medium. Engine has a lot of possibilities of its application in practice, mainly in micro- and mini cogeneration. This company is looking for financial investors to start manufacturing of this engine or for partners to sale the technology.

Description

The company decided to build up a new relatively simple and reliable external combustion engine with a rotating piston which would be more potential than the engine with linearly oscillating movement of the piston. This engine is a competitor to Stirling engine and to miniturbine.
General knowledge about functioning and construction of the Wankel rotary engine has been applied. The Wankel rotary engine is the engine with internal combustion and nowadays it is the only reliable and tried-and-true engine with the rotating piston which was mass-produced and commercially exploited.
The steam engine with rotating piston has a lot of positive characteristics and possibilities of its application in practice.

Description of engine
Working medium (water steam, steam of other liquids, oils and heated gases...) is heated in kettle out off the engine cover whereas fuel under the kettle may be of any kind. After reaching certain pressure, heated steam flows towards two intake valves onto the engine cover. The intake valves open and close alternatively. Steam which enters the work chamber of the engine, hit the side of the piston, transmits its kinetic energy and set the piston of the engine in motion. Compressive energy of steam set the engine piston in motion, too.
After closing intake valve steam expands in engine chamber, press the side of the piston and transmit its potential press energy.
Subsequent motion of the piston opens the intake valves and openings and steam which submitted energy to the engine piston is pressed out by moving piston to condenser in which it is condensed. Condensed steam is pressed back to kettle by pump to further heating.
Moving piston presses the shaft and force it to rotation. Rotating appliance (electric generator, compressor, pump, screw propeller, ventilator...) is directly fixed to the engine shaft or it is fixed through gearing.

Engine construction:
- Engine and shaft are made of cast iron
- Sealings of engine piston and bearings in the engine are made of bronze.
- Cooling and lubricating of bearings in the engine is assigned by oil.
- 350° C is maximum temperature of work medium.
- Rotation speed up to 2 000 per minute – rev. maximum of the engine shaft.
- Shaft horsepower and effectiveness of the engine depend on a pressure of work medium.

Utilization of the engine
1. Production of electric power
2. It is suitable to micro and mini cogeneration units
3. It is suitable to pump liquids
4. It is suitable to produce cool
5. It is suitable for stacionary engines for electric energy production (Wankel type)

The Slovak company is looking for investors to their company. The aim is to start the manufacturing of this engine. This is the reason why they are looking for investors to their company. Other acceptable possibility for this company is to sell this technology and the patents to potencial buyer.

Advantages and Innovations

Newly developed equipment is the engine with external combustion. It means that process of fuel burning is realized out off the engine box and it doesn’t matter what kind of fuel is used to heat working medium - solar energy, geothermal energy, biomass energy, biogas energy but other kinds of fuels as gas, liquid or solid would be used. Combination of mentioned fuels is possible as well. Another interesting possibility is usage of steam rising up from steam turbine based on piston drive of the engine obtaining additional energy from steam. Part of energy which is appointed to cool the steam rising from the steam turbine as well would be saved at the same time.

Engine is rotary one. It means that it doesn’t use part of energy to change the speed and direction of its piston as the engine with linearly movement of fist does (e.g. petrol or diesel engines).

Engine uses kinetic and potential (compressive) steam energy. After opening intake valve steam flows to engine and hit the sides of piston and loses part of its kinetic energy.

Advantages and innovations of presented technology could be found in small energetisc.
Advantages of this engine compared to turbine:
- cheaper (both production and operation)
- more efficient

Anvantages of engine compared to Stirling engine:
- more reliable

Advantages compared to engines with kinetic movement of piston: - smaller, lighter,
- less components needed,
- quieter - lower vibration rate.
