Swedish SME offers a unique approach for antimicrobial coating of medical devices

Country of Origin: Sweden
Reference Number: TOSE20190815001
Publication Date: 16 August 2019

Summary

A Swedish SME has developed a novel approach for antibacterial protection of invasive and noninvasive medical devices. The antimicrobial technology is available for polymer products applied in the urinary tract, the respiratory tract and the bloodstream. Coating of other materials is under development.

The SME is looking for partners, typically manufacturers of medical devices, interested in a licensing agreement or research cooperation agreement. Target countries are Europe and USA.

Description

A Swedish SME has developed a unique antimicrobial coating to prevent healthcare associated infections related to the use of medical devices. In vitro and clinical studies have confirmed significant reduction in bacterial colonization,

The strong antibacterial coating provides stability towards variations in pH and ionic strength and prevents the release of components with potential toxic or accumulation effects in the patient. This avoids the use of antibiotics and the ability of bacteria to develop resistance.

The antimicrobial technology is available for medical devices applied in the urinary tract, the respiratory tract and the bloodstream including a broad range of medical application areas such as:

•Urinary tract infections (urinary catheter)
•Wound infections (dressings)
•Blood infections (venous catheter)
•Ventilator associated pneumonia (endotracheal tubes, ventilation masks, nasal prong)

The SME has a pilot test plant for processing of smaller batches and demonstrations.

The SME is looking for industrial partners – manufacturers of medical devices for which healthcare associated infections due to colonization of bacteria is a problem.

The industrial partners are expected to enter licensing agreements with the aim of implementing the antibacterial coating into the existing or emerging products.

If the industrial partner finds that the offered technology needs to be customized, the SME is willing to enter into research cooperation agreement as well.

Target countries are Europe and the USA.

Advantages and Innovations

The novel antimicrobial technology offers clinical, economic and environmental advantages:

- Unique technology platform, with an antibiotic free strategy
- No similarity to existing antibiotics or silver based coating technology
- Stable effect, not based on leakage of an active substance which reduces the risk of promoting bacterial resistance
- Broad antimicrobial spectra
- Non-toxic, no adverse reaction upon implantation
- Dipping protocol development for the coating of medical devices
- Low friction. Tissue friendly coating
- Applies to the most common used materials in the medical device industry

The mechanism of action, stability and effectiveness distinguishes the SME from its competitors.

Stage Of Development

Available for demonstration

Requested partner

The SME seeks manufacturers of medical devices who require antimicrobial characteristics.

The industrial partners are expected to enter licensing agreements with the aim of implementing the antibacterial coating into the existing or emerging product/s.

If the industrial partner finds that the offered technology needs to be customized, the SME is willing to enter into research cooperation agreement as well.

Partners are predominantly sought in the USA and in Europe.
