Serbian institute offers plasma technology know-how and engineering support for optimisation of combustion systems in small and medium industrial plants

Country of Origin: Serbia
Reference Number: TORS20170831001
Publication Date: 31 August 2017

Summary

A Serbian laboratory offers plasma technology on-shell solutions, know-how, and engineering support for optimisation of combustion systems in small and medium-sized industrial plants. The state-of-the-art plasma technology is intended to substitute expensive liquid fuel used for startup and combustion support. The technology is tested in tested in Serbian, Russian, and Australian plants. The laboratory is looking for collaboration through a technical cooperation agreement.

Description

Serbian laboratory offers plasma technology on-shell solutions, know-how, and engineering support for optimization of combustion systems in the small and medium industrial plants.

In particular, the laboratory has developed plasma torch device for combustion systems in the industrial plants. This device, known as “plasmatron”, was specially designed with regard to its electric power supply, and cooling water and gas installations. Technology is fully automated, with remote monitoring, control and management of the plasma device by industrial computers. The technology was tested in Serbian, Russian, and Australian plants and it has been proven that significant cost reductions could be achieved by plasma torch device as a governing unit in a combustion systems.

For example, liquid fuel consumption for startup and combustion support of Serbian power company for its coal plants is about 100.000 t per year with a tendency to increase in future due to decline in coal quality. About half of the fuel quantity is consumed during startup, and the rest is used for combustion support when a unit is working with lower power production or with low quality coal. The laboratory offers state-of-art plasma technology, to substitute part of the fuel used in powerplants.

The laboratory has already performed: 1. appropriate thermodinamical and balance calculations 2. mathematical model of a two phase flue gas-coal particles flow, in the fuel mixture channals with and without obstacles, was developed and implemented 3. mathematical model of coal gasification in the plasma process, in the fuel mixture channal before furnice entry, was developed and implemented 4. mathematical models for calculation of thermal stress were developed and implemented 5. complete design documentation for the industrial pilot plasma facility on the power station unit boiler was completed 6. pilot plasma facility was built on the power plant unit boiler.

The laboratory has also preformed experimental investigation of the needed and possible range of the mill and plasma facility work parameters for the combustion support with plasma technology on real power plant boiler, and determined the optimal number of plasma burners for the combustion support in the furnace depending on the coal quality, power production level and other technical and technological parameters during boiler operation.

The laboratory is looking for collaboration to commercialize its technology through a technical cooperation agreement. The potential partner should work with the laboratory to apply technology. The laboratory has build around itself a consortia of SMEs able to build equipment according to customer demand or technical specifications could be given to subcontractors chosen by the customer.

Advantages and Innovations

In power combustion plant systems, almost fifty percent more of the fuel is consumed during start-up. In addition, the fuel consumtion is higher when combustion support is needed in cases when an industrial unit works with lower power regime or with low quality fuel. It has been proven that significant cost reductions can be achieved by plasma torch device as a governing unit in a combustion systems.

This technology was already proven in some Serbian, Russian and Australian plants by the laboratory.
