Modernized technology in sustainable fruit ecosystems for apple and cherry species

Country of Origin: Romania
Reference Number: TORO20200820001
Publication Date: 20 August 2020

Summary

A Romanian R&D institution developed a technology that achieves higher quality fruit production for apple and cherry species.

Fruit growers, especially apple and cherry growers, are sought for technical cooperation and commercial agreements with technical assistance.

Description

The Romanian R&D institution developed a technology that aims to contribute to the realization, in intensive orchards, of higher quality fruit production, less chemicalized, taking into account at the same time the most efficient use of natural resources (soil, water, light, etc.), protection and conservation of the environment. This technology also achieves balanced nutrition conditions for trees, apple and cherry species, species with a good favorability of culture in Romania. Technological study was made on the two varieties of apple (Idared / M9 and Querina / M9) and on the two varieties of sweet cherry (Van and Daria / Gisela 5).

At the apple orchard, two forms of canopy (Transverse Ypsilon and Solen) were tested, forms of the canopy that bring more light, increase production, improve the colour of the fruits and are storage resistant.
At the cherry orchard, two forms of canopy (Tesa and Slender spindle) were tested, with increase of fruit trees production and fruit-bearing precocity.

The research institute from Romania is seeking growers in Europe and overseas to customise the system further under technical cooperation, as well as offering an early version of the solution to apple growers under commercial agreements with technical assistance.

Advantages and Innovations

The R&D institution’s expertise in horticulture has resulted in this plant-level analysis.
The LAI (leaf area index) and PAR (photosynthetic active radiation) index were determined.
Fertilizing systems and specific fertirigation systems were applied.
The phytosanitary protection is also done with organic elements.
