Summary

The applied metrology infrastructure of a Portuguese R&D Institution with experience in calibration, measurement, and uncertainty modelling, being accredited by the National Accreditation Body, is offering its knowledge and the use of its dimensional and geometrical measuring infrastructure.

This laboratory is specialized on instrumentation, calibration and testing applied to civil engineering research and is looking to establish a research and/or technical cooperation agreement.

Description

The Portuguese laboratory, accredited since 1995 is dedicated to instrumentation, calibration and testing applied to civil engineering.

The technological offer is composed by three measuring equipment, with traceability to national or international standards, being able to perform dimensional and geometrical testing, whose main characteristics are described bellow:

CMM 1D is a unidimensional coordinate measuring machine and has a measuring interval between 0 mm and 200 mm, with a resolution of 0,000 1 mm and an instrumental accuracy equal to 0,001 mm. It is usually used as reference in the dimensional calibration of thickness blades, micrometers and micrometer heads, dial gauges, Linear Variable Differential Transformers (LVDTs), gauge blocks and strainmeters. However, its capacity is enlarged by a wide range of accessories for experimental setups and design capabilities available for the production of dedicated accessories.

CMM 3D is a three-dimensional contact coordinate measuring machine with a working volume of 1,5 m x 1,0 m x 1,0 m, capable of performing measurements with a 0,001 mm resolution with an instrumental accuracy of 0,010 mm. The machine’s software allows to build virtual features (lines, planes, circumferences, ellipses, spheres, and cylinders, among others) and to calculate related dimensional and geometrical characteristics of the measured objects, namely, distance, straightness, flatness, circularity, roundness, profiles, angularity, orthogonality, parallelism, concentricity and others. This equipment is generally used for dimensional and geometrical testing of engineering machinery, structures, products, components, physical models and research prototypes. In addition, it also allows calibrating measuring instruments such as ultrasonic level meters and optical coordinometers.

OMM 3D is a three-dimensional optical coordinate measuring machine with a working volume of 300 mm x 200 mm x 200 mm and a loading capacity of 20 kg, capable of performing measurements with a 0,000 1 mm resolution with an instrumental accuracy close to 0,005 mm. Images from the measured objects can be obtained with magnifications of 2,5x, 5x and 15x, under different illumination conditions. This equipment is generally used for dimensional quality control of laboratory instruments (for example, sieves with reduced openings), electronic setups (position and orientation of sensors such as strain gauges) and reduced-scale structures, products, components, physical models and prototypes.

All the above mentioned equipment are traceable to national or international standards, according to the International System (SI) of Units, and are subjected to periodic calibration and maintenance. The operation of this equipment is performed by highly skilled and experienced technicians which specific training, being qualified through frequent proficiency tests.

The group is open to cooperate with partners from industry, R&D institutions or universities, wishing to participate in a technology transfer process. For that purpose, their facilities are available to share with partners that may build on their expertise and scientific findings to develop new products and services.

They want to establish a partnership via a research and/ or technical cooperation agreement.

Advantages and Innovations

This laboratory has a large experience in the performance of dimensional and geometrical modelling and measurement of engineering machinery, structures, products, components, physical models, prototypes and related data analysis, uncertainty evaluation, conformity assessment and quality control.

The laboratory is accredited since 1995, being accredited today by ISO/IEC 17025, for the calibration of measuring instruments and testing equipment of several quantities, namely, dimensional, force, mass, pressure, thermodynamic temperature and humidity.
The laboratory recent facilities have an area of about 600 m2, according the metrology laboratory requirements, ensuring the strict environmental conditions for length measurement.

The laboratory also supports experimental activities related to instrumentation research and development, namely, in the civil engineering context, and metrology consulting services for research groups within its own institute and external entities (industry, R&D institutions, and universities).
