Technology for production of standardized copper and aluminium alloys from metallic fractions after processing of WEEE and Cu and Al cables.

Country of Origin: Poland
Reference Number: TOPL20171130002
Publication Date: 6 December 2017

Summary

The Research Institute in Poland, conducting research in the field of: metallurgy, recycling of metals, waste utilization and more, offers a technology, which gives possibility of waste management of metallic fractions from processing of WEEE and Cu and Al cables. Products of this technology are standardized cooper and aluminium alloys, such as Cu-Fe alloy.
The institute is looking for partners, who are interesting in licence agreement and commercial agreement with technical assistance.

Description

The waste electric and electronic equipment (WEEE) contain both metals and non-metals joined permanently (i.e. by welding, soldering or bonding) or non-permanently (i.e. by stranding or clipping). The waste cables and wires contain metal and plastic connected non-permanently for insulation. In order to separate the metallic fractions they are subjected to mechanical processing (comminution and separation). This allows producing the metallic fraction of copper and its alloys or aluminum and its alloys. The technology to produce the standard copper and aluminum alloys from the metallic fractions recovered from the WEEE waste and/or Cu and Al cable processing involves the low-temperature pyrolysis to remove the organic materials and melting in an induction furnace.

The essence of this technology lies in the production of the standardized copper and aluminum alloys from the metallic fractions from WEEE and/or Cu and Al wire processing. The share of the waste electric and electronic equipment in the standard alloy production technology can be up to 95%. One of the alloys which can be produced from the waste is Cu-Fe as the master alloy for standardized brazen alloys. The production of Cu-Fe alloy is complicated due to the segregation of Cu and Fe during solidification. Cu-Fe master alloys are used in order to prevent the segregation. The more homogenous the chemical composition of Cu-Fe master alloy, the more effectively it is melted. The offered alloy production technology provides the uniform chemical composition of the Cu-Fe master alloy.

The Polish research Institute is searching a partners, who are interested in implementation of the presented technology in the industrial conditions in the plants involved in the production of standardized copper and aluminium alloys from metallic fractions after processing of WEEE and Cu and Al cables (licence agreement or Commercial agreement with technical assistance).

Advantages and Innovations

The advantage of the technology of the production of standardized copper and aluminum alloys from the waste electric and electronic equipment and cables is the lower cost of Cu and Al alloy production, which positively influences the natural environment. Smelters produce Cu-Fe alloys with the application of pure Cu and Fe. Utilization of the waste materials to produce them will significantly reduce the production costs, what is extremely important for the competitiveness on the international market.
