X-ray based screening technology to identify unknown materials like crystalline, amorphous and liquid materials behind thick barriers.

Country of Origin: Netherlands
Reference Number: TONL20180202001
Publication Date: 12 February 2018

Summary

A Dutch SME developed x-ray based screening technology to identify unknown materials behind barriers or irregularities in materials or material layers. The SME seeks partners to develop application specific instruments based on the X-ray screening technology, for example in the security sector or the quality control of composites and metal parts for the aerospace sector. The SME is interested in commercial agreements with technical assistance and technical cooperation projects.

Description

A Dutch SME was founded in 2010 and has invented a new method for the screening of objects based on so called elastic and inelastic x-ray scattering.
The most important features of the technology are:
1. Very high energy x-rays are used, resulting in high penetration depths.
2.The x-ray signals coming back from the materials also have very high energy, so that the signals can be easily transmitted and finally detected by the sensing module.

With this screening technology it is possible to identify and analyse crystalline, amorphous or fluid materials that are hidden behind barriers like for instance glass, composites, synthetic materials, aluminium, steel or other material barriers. Further the screening technology uses a software architecture that is highly scalable for online and interconnected systems.
The screening method has been tested and proven on a large variation of prototypes and in a large number of experiments. Proof of principles have been developed for various application fields like corrosion detection, security, defence applications and
testing of new composites and other materials.

Application sectors for which the new to use screening method will be valuable are:
• The airport and other security sectors: mail and parcel check for known consignors, cargo check, luggage check, laptop check, non-transparent bottle check and so on.
• The defence sector: explosive detection, weapon check and so on.
• Industry in general: quality check on component production, structure and integrity checks on materials and installations. The technology can detect cracks and thickness changes of walls (for example oil tanks), corrosion problems behind coatings and other materials, in plates and in tubes, delamination problems (for example in layered printed circuit boards), homogeneity checks of layered materials, porosity problems in materials and so on.

The Dutch SME has a certified advanced high-energy x-ray laboratory in the eastern part of the Netherlands. The laboratory of approximately 100 square meters with 4 rooms for experiments on systems is very suitable for fundamental research experiments (open non-shielded experimental set-up, proofs of principle, proof of concept), but also in the near future for the testing and validation of industrial prototypes and first series.

The Dutch SME works in close cooperation with several partner companies to offer a new line of high-resolution detectors.

The Dutch SME looks for partners to develop R&D projects and/or industrial applications in the before mentioned application sectors.

The Dutch SME is interested in commercial agreements with technical assistance with system integrators or manufacturers of applications based on x-ray screening technology. The Dutch SME offers the x-ray based screening technology. The partner is desired to be the system integrator or the manufacturer of the application using the screening technology.

Advantages and Innovations

The most important advantages and innovations are:
• The determination of a large variety materials that are hidden behind barriers. The barriers could also be made of a large variety of materials.
• The use of very high energy x-rays, resulting in high penetration depths.
• The x-ray signals coming back from the materials also have very high energy. This results in a signal transport with a strong signal-to-noise ratio and finally a strong detection of the signals by the sensing module.
• The use of a software architecture that is very suitable for online and interconnected systems.
• The SME has been involved in various national and European research and development projects and built up its network with applied research institutes in Germany and the Netherlands, specialized component companies, start-ups as well as established companies and high-end system suppliers.
