Anti-scattering radiation filter

Country of Origin: South Korea
Reference Number: TOKR20180129002
Publication Date: 29 January 2018

Summary

A Korean institute has developed a scattered radiation shielding device. They come up with the technology because they realize that both doctors and patients are easily exposed to radiation while c-arm fluoroscopy is operating. The device encloses where x-rays are radiated and decrease the amount of radiation spreading to a person's eyes, head, and hands about 60% without lowering the quality of the fluoroscopic images. The institute is looking for commercial agreement with technical assistance.

Description

A Korean institute established in 2011 aims to improve the medical environment, so they have been focusing especially on the radiation-related instrument which is able to be used easily and safely. The institute points out that lead aprons, gloves, and gowns as protection wears are not able to protect the entire area of the human body, such as hands, eyes, and other skin areas. Therefore, they have developed protective equipment against scattered radiation during the use of a c-arm fluoroscope in surgery, and it works as the anti-scattering protector encloses the area where the x-rays are emitted.

They have examined how much exposure to radiation can be reduced by measuring the radiation doses of each configuration with and without the use of the instrument. For instance, the amounts of radiation exposures are measured when the x-ray tube located downward while the detector located upward and the other way around also, comparing in the presence and the absence of the protector. Then, the results show that patients have influenced by radiation emission 73% lower with the device than without it. Moreover, the induction of radiation on the doctors' eyes, thyroids, and livers decreases more than 60% in the use of this technology.

As mentioned, the device is advantageous for both medical staffs and patients, but the company needs to deal with the price competitiveness and commercialization. They have been considering that the device with the unique techniques can be used efficiently with reasonable price. Also, they want the hospitals and diagnostic centers as their future customer institutes to be aware of this technology. Therefore, they want their partners who are willing to consider the commercial agreement with technical assistance.

Advantages and Innovations

Anti-scattering radiation protector promotes the healthier and safer medical environment by shielding the emission of radiation during the operation of c-arm fluoroscopy. They have found out how much the direct radiation doses to patients can be reduced by installing the radial protective instrument. For example, the device decreases the amounts of scattered radiation in both the posteroanterior and anteroposterior c-arm configuration by 50% and 75% each. Doctors who are easily exposed to the radiation during examining with x-ray system have been diagnosed an ulcerative lesion and redness, swelling, and atrophy on their hands. The institute has invented this radiation protector equipment with the function of filters has benefits or more safety and more certainty compared to the other shielding products.
