Wall-climbing drone

Country of Origin: South Korea
Reference Number: TOKR20171102002
Publication Date: 24 November 2017

Summary

The Korean R&D institute has developed Wall-climbing drone.
An unmanned aerial vehicle that stably moves along walls under circumstances including regions inaccessible by people such as safety inspection of massive structures and high-rise buildings, access to a fire scene to complete a given mission.
The team is looking for license agreement, Commercial agreement with technical assistance

Description

The Korea Research Institute conducts various research activities including intelligent bio-system design, smart IT convergence system, and multi-scale energy system.

The innovative aspects of this technology are:
1. Flight/climbing posture change and wall surface movement control algorithm: stable posture change and wall movement control algorithm for changing a posture to induce dynamics and inverse dynamics such that it is attached to a wall when facing the wall during flight.
2. Design of flying and climbing robot and interpretation: design of a structure/mechanism for a stable flight of a robot and maximizing a grip force rate when climbing and interpretation thereof.
3. Three-dimensional autonomous driving navigation technology: autonomous navigation algorithm for autonomous driving using a sensor mounted on the robot, recognition of three-dimensional environment using altitude information, and calculation of a location of the robot.

A building inspection robot that uses a conventional vacuum lifter or independent infrastructure has a limited inspection range, and thus a movable inspection robot could not move depending on a state of a wall. However, a wall-climbing drone is applicable to various external walls.

Compared with an unmanned infrastructure-based climbing robot that moves over wall surfaces using magnets, vacuum systems, and adhesive materials, it has higher stability. A flight function of the wall climbing drone can prevent it from falling out of the sky and trigger it to fly back to the take-off position even though unexpected external force causes it to fall.

The team is looking for license agreement, Commercial agreement with technical assistance

Advantages and Innovations

- Applicable to various external walls
- Can fly to regional structures such as disaster areas, remote or rough regions inaccessible by people without restrictions, it has high mobility
-Flame resistant and life and ignition point detection functions are added so that it can be used as a fire inspection robot
