Development and validation of optimum solutions using satellite systems for telecommunication purpose

Country of Origin: Italy
Reference Number: TOIT20170805001
Publication Date: 5 August 2017

Summary

An Italian consortium has developed an emulation platform which is able to reproduce the behaviour of a real digital video broadcasting (DVB) return channel satellite (DVB-RCS) system from the network point of view. The consortium is looking for companies and research centres for technical and research cooperation agreements in to validate solutions including real applications and real-hardware.

Description

The research consortium is composed of eighteen prestigious Italian universities. Its background and technology skill focus on space sector and has permitted to develop and validate optimum solutions using satellite systems for telecommunication purpose.
In the satellite communication sector it offers capabilities of deep analysis and performance evaluation of complex systems. The offered technology consists in a platform that permits to optimise the dimension of the communication-band to the satellite and viceversa.
The optimisation of the communication can be applied to many selected systems: local analogue network connected to satellite channels, internet over high speed trains, security in heterogeneous networks, protocol adaptation and optimization, sensor networks, delay tolerant networks, very small aperture terminal (VSAT), digital video broadcasting (DVB) return channel satellite (DVB-RCS) system, telemedicine, emergency communications.
The technology offers the capability to support companies in the design phase of customised solutions. Also validation of real hardware and applications is a typical activity already performed with several companies or public institutions customers.

Advantages and Innovations

The developed emulation platform is able to reproduce the behaviour of a real digital video broadcasting (DVB) return channel satellite (DVB-RCS) system from the network point of view, including media access control (MAC) and physical layer (PHY) simulation (e.g., demanded assigned multiple access (DAMA), bandwidth on demand, channel error models), and part of Satellite specification such us: quality of service (QoS) and command and control protocol (P2P) for several terminals (up to one thousand and more). It works in real time, processing data traffic as it would happen on a real DVB-RCS (or different standard) system, either from local traffic loaders or external Software/hardware by means of Ethernet interface
