A new system and method for making phone calls and sending text messages

Country of Origin: Italy
Reference Number: TOIT20161222002
Publication Date: 22 December 2016

Summary

An Italian research institute has developed a new system to allow free calls and/or text messages toward any device, exploiting messages and minutes shared by other users (bridge devices) using an internet channel. The technology is suitable for smartphones and tablets. The group looks for licence agreements with companies in order to use the system and methodology.

Description

The Italian Research group proposing the present technology has extensive skills n the fields of Informatics and Telematics and provides solutions to the market in the areas of Information and Communication Technologies and of Computational Sciences.
The group has developed a new methodology which allows telephone users to share their free messages and minutes included in their mobile devices (smartphones or tablets) on a monthly plan base, already payed but not used yet. The invention refers, indeed, to the observation that several users consume only a small amount of their free minutes and messages and, at the end of the month, these minutes and messages are lost. Therefore, the proposed solution allows users to "sell" part of their minutes and messages, so that they can be exploited by other users. Similar technologies are already present on the market but they are slightly different. Infact, the invention refers to the field of communication applications (App) for mobile devices. Already existing applications are VoIP applications, instant messaging Apps and social networks. These applications allow to send message and/or perform voice calls for free only between the users of the same application, also requiring a 3G/4G connection on both caller and recipient. This technology uses an Internet channel for voice or text messages opened between the caller and the user (called "bridge device"), so the user shares its free minutes or text messages.
Currently, the technology has been patented and needs to be further implemented. For this reason the proposers look for licence agreements in order to authorize companies to exploit the technology.

Advantages and Innovations

The technology allows to establish a channel to transmit voice or text messages (SMS) without any direct billing from any phone service provider. It gives the possibility to reach any possible recipient, inlcuding landlines and legacy mobile devices with 2G connection, without requiring premium subscriptions or to buy credit, used to cover the price of phone call paid by current services to mobile operators.
