Italian company offers advanced naval drones for human safety and flexible operations

Country of Origin: Italy
Reference Number: TOIT20161123001
Publication Date: 23 November 2016

Summary

An important Italian company working in naval defence products has developed advanced Unmanned Surface Vehicles, in particular naval drones. Based on military minesweeping, the civil solution is suitable for any condition where unmanned operation are required for safety and flexibility (where human intervention is not safe, secure, not economically convenient). Commercial agreement with technical assistance, manufacturing agreement or services agreement is offered to maritime organisations.

Description

The client Italian company is considered a leading one in the naval defence sector. The company operates in the field of naval products (mainly defence) and provides solutions for marine handling and lighting technologies, with niche applications. The company is considered a world leader especially in Naval Visual Landing Aids. For the last 12 years it has been part of an United States corporation, while being before family-owned (founded in 1834). It was the first company to introduce LED replacing halogen lights in early 2000s.

One of the company's main competitive advantages lies in the integration of mechanics, electronics, optics and hydraulics to respond to evolving market requirements. Its main product and services cover the following fields:
- Visual Landing Aids (systems helping a helicopter landing on earth, offshore platforms, naval bridges);
- complex handling systems (special doors, cranes, launch and recovery systems) including naval applications;
- Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV) and Underwater Vehicles (naval drones, remotely operated vehicles - ROV).

The company offers its know-how in Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV) for naval drones: the maritime equivalent of aviation drones. The company initially developed this solution for the military market, intended for minesweeping operation, based on the experience in mine-hunting solutions. The solution has then been adapted for other civil purposes. The next generation evolved to a dual-use unmanned full modular surface platform, designed to integrate different sensors and payloads to suite various mission types. It offers solutions for any environment and condition where unmanned operation are required for safety and flexibility, as well as where human intervention is not safe or secure, need support in auto-piloting or man intervention is not economically convenient.

The system controls the vehicle through:
- remote manual control by means of joystick or keyboard
- automatic track-keeping of planned tracks
- automatic mode without radio-link, in covert operation, without any direct external control.

The Italian-based company is willing to work with companies and research centres in the sector of maritime and military industry and related ones.

Flexible types of cooperation are envisageable: commercial agreement with technical assistance, manufacturing agreement or services agreement could be proposed.

Advantages and Innovations

- It offers solutions in any situation where human intervention:
° is not safe / secure (disaster recovery, critical areas)
° need some support in auto-piloting to a predetermined route
° is not economically convenient (24/7 continuous patrolling, continuous water sampling, etc..)

- It is based on dual-use full modular surface platform

- It is the evolution of a complex, extremely secure solution developed for military (minesweeping)

- It suites various mission types, including dangerous ones

- These naval drones offer three different operating modes:
° manual assisted: remotely controlled by a joystick / keyboard of the vehicle heading and thrust
° automatic: with an automatically track-keeping of planned decided tracks. Vehicle's motion is continuously monitored by the master station
° autonomous: automatic mode without any radio-link. The drone performs planned maneuvers / operations without any direct external control thanks to obstacle avoidance and target identification features.

- The base product is fully developed and tested at sea by several customers of the company

- Any customization can be specifically tested and the company will work together with partners to identify best options and offer support.
