Description

Some of the most common injuries are finger wounds yet surprisingly there is no presently available medical product that can treat them effectively that is practical for patient use. 
The types of finger wounds suitable for this dressing would range from cuts to medium lacerations.
Products presently available:
Sticking plasters can present many problems, including: Other than for very minor cuts they do not perform well, they offer little wound closure benefit, skin maceration is very common, and its associated anaerobic environment is a further cause of slow healing. According to their manufacturers they need regular changing and suffer considerable adhesion problems unless applied on dry uncontaminated skin.
Surgical strips are an improvement over sticking plasters for finger wounds but being similar in construction also have some of their disadvantages. They can offer better wound healing than sticking plasters but perform poorly when the skin is not dry, or they are subjected to skin flexure near finger joints.
Cyanoacrylate adhesives are successfully used for many medical procedures, but they are unsuitable on areas of high skin flexure found on and around finger joints.
Sutures are a most effective method of closing deeper finger wounds but suffer the disadvantage of the patient having to attend a medical facility to have them inserted and again to have them removed.

• Inexpensive to manufacture and would compete with the sticking plaster type products.
• It can be self-applied in seconds by the patient immediately following the injury to wet, oily or blood soiled contaminated skin.
• After application, utilising a unique compression approach, there is instant, total staunching of bleeding and a significant reduction in pain and trauma.
• Needs no further covering nor any dressing changes.
• If applicable, work can be immediately resumed.

It is at the working prototype stage and has been tested in very limited clinical trials with most encouraging results.

Requested partner

The partner company should have a wide knowledge of surgical tape technology with an emphasis on strength of skin adhesion. 
A good understanding of co-construction with other materials would also be desirable.
