Surface enhancement coating technology for metals.

Country of Origin: Ireland
Reference Number: TOIE20170213001
Publication Date: 4 July 2018

Summary

An Irish SME has specific expertise in developing new coating process and materials for demanding, high performance applications. The company has developed and patented a new metal coating technology that allows significantly improved coating adhesion and performance.

Partnerships are sought with companies looking to solve unmet coating needs & utilising licensing and manufacturing agreement(s) to achieve this. Further outcomes can be discussed & agreed through expressions of interest.

Description

Existing coating processes require the using of vacuum, heat, or hazardous chemicals to create a good bond between the coating and substrate. Current coating offerings include adhesive primers, low friction coating, thermal control coatings and corrosion inhibiting coatings. However, dangerous volatiles are released during or after the coating process.

An Irish SME with a track record in collaborating with international clients, particularly in both Europe and the US, in both commercial and research institutes has specific expertise in developing new coating process and materials for demanding, high performance applications.

The company has developed and patented a new metal coating technology that allows significantly improved coating adhesion and performance.

The coating technology is highly flexible and can be used to deposit organic (e.g. fluoropolymers or epoxies) or inorganic (e.g. metal salts such as ZnP - zinc phosphate - or ceramics such as hydroxyapatite) coatings. Coatings can be applied to most metals including aluminium, titanium, copper, steel, etc.

The coating process is fully Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) compliant and is done dry at room temperature and room pressure.

Partnership is sought with companies looking to solve unmet coating needs and wish to utilise licensing and manufacturing agreement(s) to achieve this. Further outcomes can be discussed and agreed through expressions of interest.

Advantages and Innovations

The coating process is performed dry in a single step with no vacuum or heat to adhere coatings to metals.

There are no volatiles released during or after the coating.

It is suitable for sensitive metals as it is done at room temperature and pressure.

The coating technology is highly flexible and can be used to deposit organic (e.g. fluoropolymers or epoxies) or inorganic (e.g. metal salts such as ZnP - zinc phosphate - or ceramics such as hydroxyapatite) coatings.

The PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) coatings show a highly adhered, damage tolerant coating suitable for low friction or water repelling surfaces.

The coating technology can deposit adhesive primers (dry and in a single step) that provide comparable performance to industry standard wet chemistry primers.

Allows for a REACH-free application of the paint or adhesive primer without sacrificing performance

Stage Of Development

Already on the market

Stage Of Development Comment

The company is already in the market with thermal control coatings developed for the space sector. It has developed two mission critical surfaces for the upcoming Solar Orbiter mission and operates a production facility for coating flight hardware. Outside of space, the company is at a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of between 4 and 6 for a number of release surfaces, adhesive primers and corrosion inhibiting primers.

Requested partner

The applicability of the technology covers almost all sectors. The company are seeking expertise, through licensing and manufacturing agreements, to exploit the technology in sectors it cannot currently address due to size of the company.
