Summary

A Greek mechanical engineer has invented a gearless mechanical system consisting of solid parts, which in the form of one stage can alter the speed of a rotating shaft by 1⁄2 or 2, and by powers of 1⁄2 or 2 as multistage. The inventor is interested in finding partners for financial co-operation in order to invest in the patenting of this technology. He is also interested in the possibility of technical co-operation (for the creation of prototypes).

Description

A Greek mechanical engineer has developed a gearless mechanical transmission system made of solid parts that can be used in a variety of applications. 

The inventor holds a degree in mechanical engineering and has obtained a postgraduate in advanced materials technology. He has acquired experience in the fields of industry, technical supervision and maintenance of facilities, as well as teaching relative subjects in higher education establishments in Greece (technical colleges).

Mechanical systems that alter the revolutions per minute (r.p.m.) commonly use either pairs of gears (geared transmissions), chains, or belts (usually with a fixed transmission ratio). There are limitations to the power that they can transfer to their rotating speed, while some of them are restricted to low efficiency ratios. Moreover, some of them (like a planetary system of gears) have high manufacturing costs.

This Greek invention is a gearless mechanical system that can reduce the speed (r.p.m) of a rotating shaft by powers of 1/2, or can increase them by powers of 2. The application of the invention enables the mechanical transmission of power from a shaft that rotates at a certain speed (input shaft), to another one (output shaft) reducing the speed by half, quarter, an eighth, etc., or increasing it by 2, 4, 8, etc.

Its construction is not related to gears, chains, belts, or hydraulic systems, and does not use basic parts of these systems.

The basic one-stage type device can be manufactured in three versions depending on the way the parts are being mounted:-

- Version 1 has a central mounting (in the form of a fixed shaft) and one external mounting,

- Version 2 has just a central mounting,

- Version 3 has three external mountings without a central one.

The mechanical parts all have a very simple shape and are relatively easy to manufacture. All the parts (moving and non-moving) are solid, and there are no limitations to their dimensions, so that they can be rigid enough for various possible applications.

The transmission ratio is a result of the relative geometry between the parts, and is not an output of other parameters such as friction, forces, torques, etc.

Depending on the basic single stage version applied, it is possible for the various ratios of a multistage system to be used at the same time.

The invention has the potential for a variety of applications. For example: reducer for aircraft engines such as geared turbofans, reducer for generators, automotive / maritime industry uses such as gearboxes, camshaft applications, etc.

The Greek engineer is interested in financial co-operation with potential investors who would finance the patenting of the invention, as well as technical co-operation partners for constructing prototypes and, at a later stage, for commercialisation of the technology. Advantages and Innovations

The potential advantages of this invention are:-

- The power efficiency can be very high, since cylindrical or needle type friction elements can be used on the surfaces that have relative motion

- The invention has the characteristic that the surfaces that have relative motion can be wide enough, so that the power transmission can take place without too high stress on the materials.

- The contact between the relatively moving surfaces is constant.

- The transmission ratio is a result of the relative geometry between the parts, and is not an output of other parameters such as friction, forces, torques, etc.

- Very high or very low transmission ratios can be applied (by combining stages).

- Since friction can be retained to a minimum, the speed (r.p.m.) can be increased compared to other possible solutions

- Relatively simple and cheap to manufacture.

- It uses no more than five moving parts per stage, all of which are solid, and of a very simple shape. This is also true for the non-moving parts.

- Lightweight and compact (for its power output).

- Small frontal surface for its power output (compared to other solutions such as planetary gears), even for multistage applications.

- The ratio of the reduction or the increase of the speed is very accurate.

- The output shaft can be co–linear or non-linear (but always parallel) with the input shaft, and version 2 offers the ability to avoid any external mounting.

The third type (with three external mounting bases without a central mounting carrier, as described above) has been constructed, confirming the principle of operation, and is available for demonstration. Regarding the first and second types (and combinations of more than one stage), their operationality has successfully passed the simulation stage.

Requested partner

Types of partners sought are as follows:-

- financial cooperation in order to invest in the invention and finance the application for patents abroad (including annual patent fees and possible legal expenses). This agreement would also include support for the protection and promotion of the invention.

- technical cooperation (that also has to include full coverage of the costs for the application of the patents for various countries, the first annual fees in relation to them and other related expenses such as legal expenses, etc) for the creation of prototypes that exhibit the characteristics of at least two versions / types of the invention in order to demonstrate the technology to possible end-users. This agreement would also include support for the promotion of the invention.

Alternatively, a potential partner could offer:-
- a combination of financial and technical cooperation, that provides the finance of patent applications (and related expenses), the promotion of the technology, research for possible markets, but also the creation of prototypes suitable for various applications of the ivention in order to prove the applicability and highlight the benefits of it, or
- full purchase of the patent rights.

Once patent applications and related fees issues have been agreed on, the inventor is willing to discuss other aspects of collaboration, such as concession on royalties per technology sector, or entire sale of the intellectual property rights.
