A French university offers an eco-friendly synthesis of polyhydroxylated aldehydes for licensing or co-development

Country of Origin: France
Reference Number: TOFR20200904001
Publication Date: 9 September 2020

Summary

A French university has developed an eco-friendly synthesis of polyhydroxylated aldehydes by enzymatic cascade. The obtained building blocks are of interest for complex structures required by the chemical or pharmaceutical industries (intermediates, biological molecules, phytosanitary products). The university, supported by a French Technology Transfer Office, is looking to establish license, research or technical cooperation agreements to perform the scale-up to industry.

Description

State of the art

One of the major challenges of chemistry aims at reducing its environmental impact. Actions are possible at different levels, upstream on synthesis processes and downstream on biodegradation studies. The French university unit with interfacial expertise in chemistry/biology studies isolated enzymes, biocatalysis in organic synthesis for molecules preparation of biological interest and their applications.

Enzymes are natural biocatalysts highly selectives and efficient.
Biocatalysed reactions leads to environmental friendly process developments. They answer to several green chemistry principles: shortened syntheses, reduced organic solvents volumes, reduced energetic costs and enzymes are naturally biodegradables.

Technology

The technology consists in an original enzymatic cascade leading to the formation of carbon carbon bonds and enantiopure molecules with controlled stereochemistry.

1 | Using hydroxyl pyruvaldehyde phosphate (a glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate analog) as a desoxyribose-5-phosphate aldolase (DERA) substrate

2 | Implementing a multi enzymatic cascade

3 | Using specific synthesis conditions allowing the synthesis and separation of the molecule obtained from the acetaldehyde multiple addition

Partnerships

The university, supported by a French Technology Transfer Office is looking to establish license, research or technical cooperation agreements for this technology. The partners can be companies focusing on chemical intermediate synthesis, production and distribution of biological molecules, production of pharmaceuticals or intermediates, biological engineering, phytosanitary products.
Regarding the stage of development, the technology is labscale reproductible and no major obstacles have been identified for a scale up.

A Technology Transfer Office (TTO) supports the university to protect, develop and commercialize scientific findings and technologies stemming from the research unit.
In case of research or technical cooperation agreements with partners, funding could be allocated by the TTO through co-development programs.

Advantages and Innovations

- Carbon-Carbon bond formation increasing the carbon chain length with 2,4,6 or 8 carbon atoms
- Eco-friendly enzymatic synthesis (in water at room temperature)
- Stereoselective synthesis : enantiopure chiral molecules four assymetric centers with controlled stereochemistry
- No enzyme inhibition during the reaction
- Adaptable process opening the way to the production of a great variety of chiral building blocks
- General one-pot multi-step stereoselective method

Stage Of Development Comment

The technology is at labscale.
It is reproductible and no major obstacle identified for a scale up so far.
Biocatalyst and chemical substrate commonly used in the industry.

Requested partner

The university is looking for a company which could be interested in acquiring and industrializing the technology with a licence agreement or a technical cooperation agreement.

The partners can be companies focusing on chemical intermediate synthesis, production and distribution of biological molecules, production of pharmaceuticals or intermediates, biological engineering, phytosanitary products.

The partner will bring his knowledge of the market and the partnership could for instance aim at codevelopping the products that are valuable to his business with the backing of the scientific team.
