Spanish wastewater treatment company offers its expertise and knowledge for Horizon Europe and other collaborative projects related to environment, circular economy and energy

Country of Origin: Spain
Reference Number: TOES20201027001
Publication Date: 3 November 2020

Summary

A Spanish industry working in the management of wastewater treatment plants, sanitation systems and waste valorization centers has the knowledge and facilities to participate in Horizon Europe calls and other collaborative projects related to environment, circular economy and energy, accomplishing the role of validator of the different technologies that will be developed within the projects. A research cooperation agreement with SMEs, corporates, universities or research centres in envisaged.

Description

Wastewater treatments and water valorization are connected to most of the goals of the European Green Deal, such as sustainable industry, biodiversity and eliminating pollution, and validating the new technologies developed to improve the current systems is relevant for them to be transferred into the market; this should be accomplished by entities with proper expertise and facilities.

A Spanish industry, created as a service company in 1995, manages sewage from a population higher than 9,500,000 inhabitants, with a volume of treated water 817,000,000 m3/year. Their main R&D fields of expertise are: microbiological control, energy-water nexus, nutrient removal, recovery of nutrients and added-value products, sewage sludge valorisation and hygienisation, membrane treatment, codigestion, industrial wastewater treatment and disinfection.

They have led projects in European R&D programmes focused on the production of sustainable fertilising products from local bio-based waste and on high-solids anaerobic sewage sludge treatment, being their current main concerns the products recovery from waste treatments, sustainable water facilities and closing the loop.

They can validate technologies that are close to commercialization but also those that still require some degree of research. They can validate prototypes in different types of WWTP (Wastewater treatment plants) regarding volume of wastewater treated, type of treatment, regions with different climatic conditions and influents, etc. They can provide laboratories and equipment for the studies, WWTP simulation systems and experts on anaerobic digestion, codigestion, recovery of nutrients, emerging contaminants removal, water reuse and waste management.

This industry seeks research cooperation agreements with SMEs, corporates, research centres and universities willing to participate or leading a proposal for the Horizon Europe calls on environment, circular economy and energy.

Advantages and Innovations

The company manages around 300 WWTP from a population of more than 9.5 M inhabitants, with a volume of treated water that exceeds 820M m3/year in Spain, Italy and South America. They have focused their R&D&I efforts mainly in treatment and recovery of sewage sludge, energy efficiency, carbon footprint and greenhouse gases emissions reduction, filtration systems, co-digestion, industrial discharges, microbiological control, disinfection, safety and hygiene and nutrient removal and in the reduction of the impact of the managed facilities in the welfare of the surrounding populations.

Furthermore, they want to work towards validating technologies that are close to commercialization as well as those that will require significant research since they have project managers that are qualified doctors in chemical engineering, agronomists and materials science. The prototypes can be validated in different types of WWTP regarding volume of wastewater treated, type of treatment, regions with different climatic conditions and influents, etc. The industry can provide their laboratories and equipment for the studies (BMP analysis, calibration of activated sludge models, fish analysis, etc). They have also experience in WWTP simulation and count on experts on anaerobic digestion, codigestion, recovery of nutrients, emerging contaminants removal, water reuse and waste management.
