Molds and polycomponent replicas of high quality of fossils, rocks and minerals

Country of Origin: Spain
Reference Number: TOES20181019002
Publication Date: 25 October 2018

Summary

A Spanish R&D institute has developed a Technique for making polycomponent molds and replicas of fossils, rocks, and minerals. The high quality of the resulting specimens and their great visual similarity with the originals, let substitution of originals by replicas in places of an exhibition (for example in museums). This type of replicas is especially important to preserve unique or exceptional fossils and minerals. They are looking for a License agreement, commercial and cooperation agreements.

Description

The technique carried out by the Spanish R&D institute follows the traditional RTV-2 silicone elastomer molding technique with the most suitable release agents, if necessary, which would be eliminated at the end of the process.
The copies use the most appropriate materials for their physical and chemical characteristics, pursuing at all times the greatest visual similarity with the original materials to replicate so that they can substitute for their appearance to the originals in places of an exhibition as showcases. This is especially useful in unique or exceptional holotypes and minerals, as well as those that should be out of sight and kept in special containers.
Production of this type of replicas is especially important to preserve unique or exceptional fossils and minerals. The molding and casting of the various specimens guarantee the safeguarding of the original so that the original elements are not altered by stains or breaks.
The Spanish R&D institute offers the production of molds and replicas of rocks, fossils, and minerals, both from this institution and others, as well as from particular origins, via a License agreement, commercial and cooperation agreements.

Advantages and Innovations

Traditionally replicas have been denigrated, both for their poor quality and for the damage caused to the originals when molded by low-skilled professionals. With this methodology, high-quality copies are obtained so that they are not distinguishable from the original in the display case, except for the placard.
In this methodological procedure for the reproduction of fossil rocks and minerals, different materials are used, either opaque, translucent or transparent, coexisting in the same piece and capable of reproducing the same aspect as the original and characteristics, such as zones and inclusions in crystals, or enamel and dentin in the jaw of a vertebrate.
Competitive advantages:

• High-quality copies, indistinguishable in the showcase from the original.
• Multicomponent replicas, admitting the coexistence of opaque, translucent or transparent elements in the same piece.
• The molding and casting of the various specimens guarantee the safeguarding of the original so that the original elements are not altered by stains or breaks.

The Spanish R&D Institute is looking for different profiles:

- Universities, R&D institutions, museums: commercial agreement with technical assistance to realize the molds and replicas of their originals and technical cooperation agreement for boosting their technology through research collaborations.

- SMEs and other companies: commercial agreement with technical assistance to make the molds of the original specimens and gives technical advice to the company for the realization of the replicas. Also, this type of partner is sought for license agreements.
