Device to efficiently separate particles according to size

Country of Origin: Spain
Reference Number: TOES20180201001
Publication Date: 6 February 2018

Summary

A Spanish research centre has developed a sieving device able to solve some of the problems of current systems. The incorporation of a cover protects the user. A further advantag is the easy activation system. Industrial partners manufacturing laboratory equipment are sought to collaborate through a licence agreement.

Description

Sieving is a widely extended methodology for granulometric analysis. It is used in different sectors to obtain certain particle sizes because it is a cheap and simple process. For example it can be used to separate impure substances from fine substances, among multiple other applications. Manual sieves are used in specific cases in which it is necessary to sieve a certain material to obtain a determined granulometry. One technical problem of these devices is the slow sieving process. In addition, due to the movements done with the sieve, part of the material processed can get scattered in the air, getting in direct contact with the user.

A Spanish Research Institution has developed a technology which consists on a sieving device which solves some of the previously described problems. This system has a main gap body where the sieve is fitted and inside it, the sample is placed and covered with a lid. The engine and the handle are located at the upper part of the cover and they allow the activation of the dragging elements. When the dragging elements are moved, the sample goes through the sieve, avoid the retention of particles inside its net.

Therefore, industrial partners manufacturing sieves, separation technologies and different laboratory equipment are being sought for patent licensing, technology development and commercialization.

Advantages and Innovations

- The device allows quicker sieving operations obtaining better results.
- Direct contact between the user and the sample is avoided. This is especially important when the sample treated has materials that could be harmful for health.
- The efficacy of the sieving process is better than the one obtained with current devices.
- The sieve suffers less deterioration, extending its useful life.
