Framework offered for the development of sensor applications for the internet of things.

Country of Origin: Spain
Reference Number: TOES20170915001
Publication Date: 15 September 2017

Summary

A Spanish technological company specialised in internet of things (IoT) solutions, offers a modular and standards-based framework for the easy development of IoT sensor applications. It is highly customisable, from the physical hardware to the online user interface, and suits a wide range of applications. The company offers the platform for commercial agreement with technical assistance.

Description

The Spanish-German company (with headquarters in Spain and a delegation and commercial office in Germany) was founded by a multidisciplinary team of engineers with different backgrounds in industry and academia.

The development of internet of things (IoT) solutions using conventional approaches is complex and time consuming due to the lack of common architectures and languages, and the widespread use of non-standard, proprietary interfaces and sensor data formats. To address this, the company has developed a disruptive, modular, standards-based framework for the development of fast time-to-market IoT solutions. The framework platform provides tools to develop new marketable Internet of Things (IoT) sensor applications with ease.

The framework contains proprietary hardware and software components, as a means to provide rapid, and customized development of market ready IoT sensor and actuator products.
More specifically, the company can develop new products in the field of IoT based on this framework platform. In this sense, the company can provide:
• Concept development.
• Technical and commercial feasibility assessment
• Specifications and system design.
• Project planning, development, and management.
• Standard or customized electronic hardware, with sensors, processing, and wireless communications.
• Rapid prototyping and contract manufacturer (from several prototypes to thousands of units).
• Testing, certification and CE marking of electronics.
• Customized software for mobile and cloud-based applications.

In order to illustrate with an example, the following case study about surveillance and control of diseases that are carrying mosquitoes is presented. This is usually done by deploying traps that have to be manually inspected periodically to count mosquitoes and differentiate species. Based on the data retrieved by technicians in the field, decisions are made on where and when control actions must be implemented (e.g. fumigation). Subsequent field trips to inspect traps will provide information on the effectiveness of the control measures. Besides being laborious and tedious, this represents up to 95% of the costs of maintaining a mosquito surveillance network.
Following with the case study, the company is working on the development and market launch of a smart mosquito trap based on the framework platform of this profile. In this example, this trap will be capable of automatically counting mosquitoes and identifying the species, wirelessly transmitting the data to a cloud application. This will enable more efficient and cost-effective surveillance networks to protect the population from disease outbreaks like Zika, Dengue, Chikungunya, etc.

The type of partnership envisaged is commercial agreement with technical assistance, in order to expand to new country markets and sectors of application.

Advantages and Innovations

The members of its team of engineers have more than 20 years of experience in the industry of sensor application and IoT, and they have participated in a large number of research programmes, more specifically EU (European Union) framework programmes (FP and H2020).
The advantage of this platform over other developers, companies and R&D groups is that the latter have been using existing platforms which are okay to prototype straightforward sensor applications with low technology readiness levels (TRL) between 1 and 4. These are generally not going to be okay when wanting to advance to TRL5 prototyping and above, especially when dealing with sensors that are not off-the-shelf. Indeed, these platforms are generally inadequate to reach TRL9 and to go into production, where issues such as functionality, cost, power consumption, scalability, margin, manufacturability, testability, packaging, mechanical robustness, working conditions (e.g. temperature, humidity), etc. need to be confronted.

Advantages of developing the IoT application with the framework platform:
• Hardware platforms ready- static and mobile.
• Standards based.
• Interoperability.
• Scalability.
• Low power consumption.
• Reduced costs.
• Smartphone integration.
• Customisation.
• Cloud-ready.
• Fast time to pilot implementation.
• Fast time to volume production.
• Fast time to market introduction.
