License for a bending neutral pressure distribution plate for the measurement of middle to very large forces

Country of Origin: Germany
Reference Number: TODE20210413003
Publication Date: 13 April 2021

Summary

A German research institute has developed a bending neutral pressure distribution plate for the reduction of measuring uncertainties during the measurement of middle (10 kN) to very large forces (higher than 10 MN). Currently such measurements require the connection of several calibrated force transducers together to form a build-up measuring system. Due to the special geometry of the system, complex compensation mechanisms become unnecessary. The institute is looking for licensees.

Description

A research institute based in Germany active in metrology has developed a bending neutral pressure distribution plate which leads to higher certainty during the measurement of middle (10 kN) to very large forces (higher than 10 MN). Due to increasing requirements, especially in the realisation of large force transducers up to 50 MN, the reduction of the measurement uncertainty of these systems will become more and more important in the future. Currently such measurements require the connection of several calibrated force transducers together to form a build-up measuring system. Due to the special geometry of the system, complex compensation mechanisms become unnecessary.
Currently commercially available build-up systems have a pressure plate, which loads the pressure as evenly as possible to all force transducers. Under load the pressure plates are deflected, so that a parasitic force occurs in the transverse direction of the force transducer.
The new development takes advantage of the unavoidable elastic deformation. Due to a special shape of the cross section, the bending angle at the load introduction into the force transducers is almost zero. This transmits a vertical force independent of the load, at which no transverse force is introduced into the transducer. The geometry parameters of the pressure distribution plate must be determined by numerical simulation. A prototype with a nominal load of 30 kN has already been realized. For simplified production, the pressure distribution plate can consist of several parts which are screwed together to form a complete pressure distribution system.
Economic importance: The load introduction parts of very large build-up systems are very stiff, which requires a large amount of material. By exploiting the elastic properties of this construction, great amounts of material can be saved. The institute is looking for licensees for the international commercial exploitation of the innovation.
