License for a pulse generator circuit with high pulse repetition rate and synchronisation to an external HF signal

Country of Origin: Germany
Reference Number: TODE20210413002
Publication Date: 13 April 2021

Summary

A German research institute has developed a pulse generator circuit with high pulse repetition rate and synchronisation to an external high-frequency (HF) signal. High pulse repetition rates are used for a variety of applications in controlling of electro-optical devices as diode lasers, pockels cells, electro-optical modulators or even image intensifiers. The institute looks for partners for the joint further development of the functional model (tech. cooperation agreement) and for licensees.

Description

A research institute active in metrology in Germany has developed a pulse generator circuit with a high pulse repetition rate and synchronisation to an external high frequency (HF) signal. The repetition frequency of such pulse generators is currently limited to a few megahertz. The offered invention significantly increases the pulse repetition rate due to a special circuit design. Several identical pulse generators are used periodically in a fixed sequence and controlled by a separate unit. In addition a synchronisation to an external, arbitrary selectable high-frequency signal is possible and can be adjusted to the phase position. For the new circuit design several bi-polar transistors are controlled in the avalanche breakdown regime. The herby generated heat (or power dissipation) is distributed to individual pulse generators. The average power consumed by each generator can thus be maintained at a safe level to achieve a high overall pulse repetition rate. In this way current pulses in the nanosecond range can be generated at higher voltages of more than 10 Volts. The circuit solution is optionally expandable by adding new generators to obtain the desired pulse repetition rate.
In addition the circuit generates pulse sequences that can be synchronised with an external high-frequency signal (HF signal). This allows the choice of specific field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and an internal second clock.
High pulse repetition rates are used for various applications in the control of e.g. electro-optical devices such as diode lasers, Pockels cells, electro-optical modulators or image intensifiers.
The institute looks for partners for the joint further development of the functional model (technical cooperation agreement) and for licensees to increase the international commercial expoitation of the innovation.
