Biologically active hybrid filter material for selective cleaning and desulphurization of biogenic fuel gas or industrial waste air (e.g. biogas, landfill gas, pyrolysis gas, …)

Country of Origin: Germany
Reference Number: TODE20181122001
Publication Date: 22 November 2018

Summary

A German company has developed a range of biologically active (hybrid) filter materials for the selective elimination of gaseous pollutants e.g sulphur compounds from biogas or pollutants and odours from industrial waste air e.g. ammonia, hydrogen sulphide, butyric acid, skatole, etc. This alternative to active carbon filters is regenerated in the filter process and thus allows multiple uses. The company seeks commercial agreements in the waste air cleaning sector.

Description

Gaseous pollutants and odours of waste air such as biogas, landfill gas, pyrolysis gas etc. entail major environmental hazards and health risks. A German company has developed and patented a biologically active hybrid filter material which allows the selective decomposition and elimination of gaseous pollutants and odours in all kinds of waste air. This sophisticated technology is a cost-efficient, technically advanced and environmentally friendly alternative to active carbon filters.
Depending on the load of the waste air the air filter can be designed biologically active only (break down of low continuous loads of malodours and pollutants) or combined with a chemical adsorbent (hybrid, self-regenerating filter material for high, variable or discontinuous loads of waste air, also with high peak loads).
The biological / hybrid filter material is available in the form of pellets which can selectively decompose / eliminate substances like Hydrogen sulphide (H2S), Hydrogen cyanide (HCN), Volatile organic acids, Ammonia (NH3), Amines, Alcohols, Formaldehyde (CH2O), Solvents, Organic hydrocarbons, Mercaptans (CH4S), and many more.
The technology does not only include the filter material, but also the actual filter units. Depending on the envisaged application they can be designed/applied as manhole biofilter, top filter, universal filter, pipe filter, pipe filter cartridge as well as big filter modules.

The innovative hybrid filter technology is environmentally friendly and sustainable. Its base material is cellulose obtained as secondary raw materials from the paper manufacturing industry. It is rich in nutrients, free of hazardous residues and can store water. Its multiple usabilities based on its regenerating properties contribute to the preservation of natural recourses.
Starting with the assessment of the particular odour or pollution problem through measuring process parameters, chemical analysis and detecting emission sources, the company offers conceptual design, selection of the appropriate filter material, scaling of air cleaning units and manufacture of entire treatment plants.

The company is looking for industrial partners who plan, manufacture and operate technical plants for waste air treatment and purification as well as agricultural or biogas companies for commercial cooperation with technical assistance.

Current and Potential Domain of Application: Companies involved in planning, manufacture or operation of waste air treatment or biogas plants

Advantages and Innovations

•	High efficiency with regard to costs and technical performance / cleaning capacity / low energy demand
• auto-regeneration / multiple uses of the filter material - advantage compared to active carbon filters
• Environmentally friendly - saving recourses by the use of secondary raw materials from paper manufacturing (paper fibre waste) and from drinking water purification (iron oxide hydrate)
