Wearable electronic solution that monitors systolic and diastolic blood pressure is available for licensing

Country of Origin: Czech Republic

Summary

Researchers from a Czech university have developed and successfully tested a solution for remote and automatic monitoring of a personal health condition, based on contactless scanning and computing the systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The unit is wearable allowing long-term and incessant control of a person´s blood pressure. The researchers are looking for partners interested in a licensing agreement.

Description

Currently, specialized devices exist that allow control of the systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Only recently, these devices started to acquire contactless interface that allows connection to various electronic equipment like PCs or smartphones.

While heartbeat or temperature controls are already installed in smartwatches, measuring systolic and diastolic blood pressure remains domain of relatively cumbersome manometers with wristbands (oscilometric method). This method has its limits, it is energetically demanding and irritating, it is not flexible as well.

The Czech university researchers addressed these drawbacks using the parameters of pletysmographic curve for computing the systolic and diastolic pressure without the need of applying irritating wristband. The pletysmographic curve is digitalised and with the use of proprietary method of filtration and segmentation of data, a choice of relevant segments is made and it is further used for stating the values of systolic and diastolic pressure of the monitored person.

The invention is based on the continually or onetime gained pletysmographic curve that is mathematically computed based on an algorithm and the result is declared as the systolic and diastolic pressure of the monitored person. This unit, by its size, is convenient alternative for everyday use as its size allows commercialization in a form of a smartband wirelessly communicating with, e.g. a smartphone or PC that can pass the data further to a medical centre.

Apart from the unique measurement of the systolic and diastolic pressure, the unit can include also several standard functions like time but also heartbeat, temperature, breathing, blood oxygen amount.

The researchers search for cooperation with a company capable to complete design of the solution into a form of a product and to commercialize it. A licensing agreement will provide access to know-how to make this solution and implementation described in patents.

Advantages and Innovations

-	immediate or continuous contactless measurement of the systolic and diastolic blood pressure
- a possibility to add other needed measurements for monitoring of personal health conditions (heartbeat, temperature, breathing, blood oxygen amount etc.)
- measurements are further processed also by a home centre (PC) and in case of need they are a consistent part of the supervising system with the help of central database. The system also reacts to unexpected events of health problems and it is able to call help and give a precise location to the emergency centre

Stage Of Development

Under development/lab tested

Stage Of Development Comment

The solution was successfully tested in in the Czech Republic on a sample of 1000 patients.

Requested partner

The university would like to conclude a license agreement e.g. with a partner manufacturing health devices for home use or/and hospital/clinical care. A partner is expected to manufacture the invention and market it.
