New apple varieties with polygenic scab resistance
Country of Origin: Czech Republic
Reference Number: TOCZ20170724003
Publication Date: 24 July 2017
Summary
Czech academic institution with plant breeding program is developing a new apple varieties with polygenic scab resistence. The institution is looking for a partner who will help with research on research cooperation agreement bases.
Description
New varieties of apple tree with increased resistance to scab were developed by Czech academic institution. This institution has its own plant breeding program which is focused on breeding varieties of apple trees resistant to diseases, especially to scab, the most serious disease of apple. Breeding program uses monogenic sources of resistance to scab (Vf) from a wild-type Malus floribunda and chosen varieties and selections with resistance on polygenic basis. However, their molecular detection and distinction is not yet possible. Current breeding is aimed at further improving of economic properties of resistant varieties and to strengthen resistance to scab resistance Vf in combination with resistance to polygenic basis. To achieve this, it is necessary to validate the molecular markers for different types of resistance. With the use of new methods for next generation sequencing (NGS) station can verify such new genetic markers and use them distinguish the origins of polygenic resistance in these new varieties.
The institution offers research coooperation agreement to interested partners.
Advantages and Innovations
Plant breeding program is focused on resistance to scab, the most serious disease of commercially grown apple varieties. The monogenic resistance based on Vf gene from a wild species Malus floribunda was used in the past for this purpose. Recently however, the sources of resistance to scab on polygenic basis have been found in the station. Unlike monogenic, which is not durable in nature, it provides permanent resistance.
