Summary
A Bulgarian academic research organisation with experience in R&D in the field of organic chemistry, corrosion and electrochemistry has formulated a highly efficient corrosion inhibitor for metals and alloys in acidic media, based on a polyaniline water nanodispersion. The inhibitor is suited for processes of pickling, acid cleaning, etc. The team is looking to reach manufacturing agreements with interested companies in order to use the know-how for manufacturing the product.
Description
An academic research organisation, with a strong background in organic chemistry and interdisciplinary research, has developed a highly efficient corrosion inhibitor of metals and alloys in acidic media, based on aqueous polyaniline nanodispersion.
Corrosion is a dangerous and costly problem. It is a natural process that converts a refined metal into a more chemically-stable form such as oxide, hydroxide, or sulfide. It is the gradual destruction of materials (usually metals) by chemical and/or electrochemical reaction with their environment. Corrosion engineering is the field dedicated to controlling and preventing corrosion.
The innovative technology developed by the Bulgarian research team provides a convenient method for adding insoluble polyaniline into acidic media during pickling, acid cleaning, etc. The inhibitor ensures effective corrosion protection at low concentrations of 20 to 40 part per million. It is also active in aggressive media and at high temperatures, working both against general and pitting corrosion. The inhibitor does not hinder the removal of metal oxides and other contaminants from the metal surface during pickling. The dispersion is stable and has a long shelf life. It is prepared from readily available materials, and the process does not require any special equipment and control methods, other than those available in standard manufacturing facilities.
The manufacturing know-how and specification data, as well as test reports from using the dispersion as a corrosion inhibitor in acidic environments is available for interested companies under manufacturing agreement.
Advantages and Innovations
The corrosion inhibiting action of polyaniline is well known, but its poor water solubility limits its use.
The aqueous polyaniline dispersion has the following advantages as a corrosion inhibitor:
- the inhibitor is directly introduced into corrosion media;
- it is stable in aggressive media;
- it is effective at very low concentrations (10-40 ppm);
- upon pH neutralisation, polyaniline precipitates, thus facilitating wastewater treatment.
