Portable radiometer for gamma and neutron radiation

Country of Origin: Bulgaria
Reference Number: TOBG20190219001
Publication Date: 19 February 2019

Summary

A Bulgarian research institute in the field of nuclear methods and apparatuses has developed a portable gamma and neutron radiometer to control radioactive isotopes and to intercept unregulated radioactive isotope traffic, including spent nuclear fuel, which could be used for so-called "dirty bomb". The Institute is looking for a joint venture cooperation.

Description

Intercepting the traffic of radioactive isotopes into a variety of chemical compounds, especially radioactive isotopes in spent nuclear fuel is a global problem in connection with present-day terrorism.
The radiometer developed by a Bulgarian research institute in the field of nuclear methods and apparatuses is a device for simultaneous measurement of gamma and neutron radiation. The proposed prototype consists of two spectrometric channels for gamma quanta and neutrons. There is a capability of obtaining gamma spectra, as well as an amplitude spectrum from the neutron detector, which verifies its normal operation at any moment chosen by the operator. There is a wireless connection between the radiometer and a smartphone / computer (laptop) through which the radiometer is operated and the data are recorded continuously. The radiometer may be used in all places where precise control of radioactive isotope traffic is required, such as border control, airports, ports, checkpoints in various laboratories, institutes, military sites, etc. The described radiometer is patent pending.
The research institute is looking for joint venture agreement with foreign partners with experience in the field of radiometry. The cooperation will also provide easier access to their markets.

Advantages and Innovations

The radiometer has very small dimensions. It can be hidden in a plastic or other organic material and placed in a such way that it would be difficult to notice. It has two spectrometric channels and wireless connection for remote operation.
