Summary

Bulgarian scientific organization is working in the field of robotic control using electroencephalography signals from the human brain activity.
The new technology for patient’s rehabilitation is based on the application of the virtual reality that is the main innovative aspect.
The potential application field is in hospitals, medical rehabilitation centers.
The organisation is looking for research cooperation agreement with scientific partners.

Description

Bulgarian scientific organization has a research team working in the field of robotics. The control approaches are related with the analysis and application of electroencephalography signals from the human brain.
The new technology is addressed to the necessity of better permanent assistance of patients with mobility impairment during rehabilitation procedures. In some cases it is very important the monitoring of the daily patients’ activity too. On this way the medical treatment will be better, more efficient and faster.
Nowadays the new information and control technologies are very important in the modern humanitarian medicine. For control of various robotic medical systems it is necessary to use the advantages of innovative interfaces “human-computer” working in virtual environments.
The investigations related with the development of intelligent interfaces “human-computer” are increased in the last few years.
The development of intelligent interface “human-computer” includes different technologies for object control with various bio-metric modalities (voice, gesture, emotions, eye tracking, brain activity). The object control with the mentioned above technologies become very popular in the last decade. Different methods, algorithms and systems were developed and tested.
The new technology offered by the scientific organization improves the range, reliability and applicability. New multi-modal interfaces are used that are self-learned or task, user and environment oriented.
During the development of the modern technologies, the medical robotic systems is using the virtual reality as a tool for assessment and medical treatment.
The new technology is related with the development of specialized software application in the virtual reality applicable for assisted medical systems. Several sensors are used, control system and a display with high resolution like 3D glasses). On this way the new technology creates an interactive therapy giving the possibility of the patients to interact directly with the environment.
The new technology is based mainly on the application of the virtual reality that is the main innovative aspect. The other advantage is related with the development of a reliable interaction between the patient and the doctor monitoring and processing the eye tracking, emotions, hand gestures, speech and electroencephalography signals in real time.
The scientific organisation is looking for cooperation with high-technological research centers and organizations. The aim is to be involved in an international consortium for implementation of European scientific projects. Therefore the partnership sought is a research technological agreement.

Advantages and Innovations

The innovative aspects are related with the development and application of the following algorithms, approaches and methods:

• New algorithm for analysis and classification of human face images.
• Approach for linear transformation of the electroencephalography signals.
• New method for autonomous assessment of the sleep quality applying the electroencephalography and electrooculography analysis and the conceptual classification with hidden Markovski model.
• Models of all basic emotional states are created thus analyzing the brain activity (statistical and spectral characteristics of the electroencephalography signals).
• The pain of the patient is detected with the created models of the emotional states analyzing the facial expression.
• It is applied a specially developed method for mobile object’s tracking using a modified filter and a static camera.
• Direction of the human eye tracking system is developed with active camera and 3D sensor.
• Model for determination of the 3D position of the human head is developed.
• Algorithm for detection, marking and recording or the human head motion applied for virtual reality.
The game approach is used for patient’s rehabilitation, testing suitable sensors.
A rehabilitation program for upper limbs of patient with motor disabilities is developed using modern software platforms for virtual reality.
All this technology is functionally tested developing a prototype of a robotic system assisting the patient’s rehabilitation.

Requested partner

The scientific organisation is looking for research cooperation agreement with high-technological research centers and organizations. The aim is to be involved in an international consortium for implementation of European scientific projects.
The role of the potential partner is further investigation and analysis of the electroencephalography signals from the brain activity and testing the control approach. Partners could be also medical centers and hospitals interested in monitoring of the patient's rehabilitation.
