Biofiltration process for hydrogen sulphide removal from gas streams

Country of Origin: Belgium
Reference Number: TOBE20171222001
Publication Date: 16 January 2018

Summary

The biofiltration process developed by a Belgian research center (RC) removes hydrogen sulphide from gaseous streams by the selective oxidation of sulfide to elemental sulfur. This process has several advantages compared to existing methods: no need to replace the biocatalyst, low chemical consumption and sulphide removal efficiency> 95 %. The RC is looking for an industrial partner who wants to further develop (construction of a demonstration plant) and commercialize the technology (licensing)

Description

Elaborating solutions for water societal challenges of today, the RC is independent research and technology organization in the areas of cleantech and environmental biotechnologies. The RC offers an innovative solution for biological sulphide removal, an expertise in microbial ecology and a know-how in biotechnological process design. The filtration process was evaluated and validated in a reasonably realistic environment, with hydrogen sulphide (H2S )up to 4000 ppmV (parts per million volume), and reach TRL 5 (technology readiness Level 5).

Tighter environmental regulations and growing interest in sustainability are pushing implementation of waste (water) treatment innovations. Anaerobic technologies are widely adopted as a cost-effective manner to waste (water) treatment while generating biogas. In this sense, burning biogas in a combined heat and power plant requires the removal of hydrogen sulphide. The proposed filtration process offers gas treatment as well as sulfur recovery. It could significantly boost the development of anaerobic technologies.
The Belgian RC is looking for an industrial partner who is interested to commercialize the technology under licence agreement. This partner will contribute to the building design and the construction of a full-scale demonstrator.

Advantages and Innovations

The filtration process for gas streams has several advantages compared to existing biological and physicochemical methods:

(1) No need to replace the biocatalyst;
(2) Minimal water and chemical consumption;
(3) Operation at ambient temperatures;
(4) Compact unit thanks to a high volumetric elimination rates of 100 to 175 g H2S per m3 of reactor h-1;
(5) H2S removal to below 200 ppmV can be guaranteed;
(6) Valuable byproduct.

Based on an innovative concept of microbial resource management, this technology offers the opportunity to recover sulphur as usable byproduct, avoid the accumulation of sulfate salts and prevent clogging problems.

Stage Of Development

Available for demonstration

Requested partner

The Belgian RC is looking for an industrial partner specialized in anaerobic digestion or in harmful and odorous gaseous waste purification. The private partner is active in the design and implementation of industrial plants, preferably with an after-sales service for facilities maintenance.
The private partner wants to further develop the technology by implementing a demonstration plant (industrial scale) and will be in charge of the commercialization of the process. The target market will include food processing industries, heavy and fine chemicals plants and waste(water) treatment plant.
The Belgian RC will provide technical support throughout the development process, including after-sales support if needed
