A Korean research institute is seeking a Swiss or French company to develop IoT platforms for silver town under Korean government’s bilateral R&D programs with Switzerland and France

Country of Origin: South Korea
Reference Number: RDKR20180628003
Publication Date: 28 June 2018

Summary

South Korea’s national research institute is developing IoT platforms and applications for the silver town smart homes. The result will allow companies or customers to efficiently connect sensing information, manage data and seamlessly interact, or to serve health monitoring. Moving image processing & algorithm developing companies from France and Switzerland are sought to apply for a bilateral R&D program between South Korea and France/Switzerland in August 2018.

Description

The world’s population is ageing: virtually every country in the world is experiencing growth in the number and proportion of older persons in their population. Population ageing is poised to become one of the most significant social transformations of the twenty-first century, with implications for nearly all sectors of society, including labor and financial markets, the demand for goods and services, such as housing. (United Nations, Global Issues, 2017)

To improve the quality of life due to the development of smart home for elderly people, South Korea’s national research institute with state-of-art cleanroom, new materials, and analysis labs is developing IoT (Internet of Things) platforms and applications for the silver town smart homes. The result will allow companies or customers to efficiently connect sensing information, manage data and seamlessly interact with their customers, or to serve health monitoring of elderly people where they live and subsequently inform doctors and families the status of the residents in an emergency circumstances or in any aggravated circumstances. Proper care or action can be made in advance before culminating to a serious situation.

The institute’s platform will use a sensor which monitors body temperature changes, facial blood circulation, and heart beats, thereby delivering more precise services to elderly people, caregivers and their families. Also, it will provide significant information that no current solution on the market is providing, such as the level of severity of a fall (broken bone, heart rate, and breath rate), anomalies in vital signs, and anomalies in daily activities that might be an indicator of physical decline. The sensor works even when it is not worn by the user or when it does not have contact with the human body. Also, multiple information can be collected from one sensor.

The institute owns the sensor technology which is essential in the development of the platform and they are looking for a system company which deals with moving images to be processed to get useful information or a data mining company. The company should be able to carry out communication between sensors, data acquisition system, data manage controlling, data streaming in real time, and recognition algorithm sensing abnormal situation.

The chosen framework for this project is the Korean government’s bilateral R&D program with France and Switzerland. SMEs in either France or Switzerland are sought. The estimated duration of the project is three years. The deadline for the submission is August 7th 2018 for the Korea-Switzerland bilateral R&D program and August 30th 2018 for the Korea-France bilateral R&D program. EOIs will be accepted until July 30 2018 for the Korea-Switzerland bilateral R&D program and August 24 for the Korea-France program.

Advantages and Innovations

-	Improving quality of life due to the development of smart home for elderly people to keep their health and life more secure and comfortable based on IoT sensor & systems (Ambient assisted living)

- Realization of senior care and smart homes due to recognition of moving and vital signs, resulting in preventing tools in a common life space such as hospital, kinder garden, school, and companies

- Removal of the constraints presented by similar functional products; wearable sensors, situation not detected, i.e., when the user is in the shower due to the no waterproof, high percentage of false alarms, and low accuracy

- Creation of jobs in a various range of industry because of many different technologies required to converge.
