H2020-JTI-BBI-2019-SO3-D3: looking for an SME with expertise in biomass treatment through steam explosion or hydrothermal process

Country of Origin: Italy
Reference Number: RDIT20190509001
Publication Date: 9 May 2019

Summary

An Italian company active in the food industry is willing to create new value chains from a production byproduct within a demonstration project under H2020-JTI-BBI 2019 aimed at developing a functional ingredient to meet market requirements in different sectors. The company is looking for an SME based in the listed countries, with proven expertise in steam explosion or hydrothermal process at least at pilot scale, able to scale up the production process at a food grade level.

Description

Several market sectors utilise functional ingredients and additives to achieve the desired functionality and performance of their consumer products. Specialty, functional molecules are needed to meet market requirements in sectors as diverse as cosmetics, flavours and fragrances, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, medicine, beverages, food and feed.
In consumer products, especially those related to personal and home care, food and beverages, consumers are demanding functional natural products and ingredients. In industrial products, bio-based formulations open interesting opportunities for better performance and higher sustainability. In addition, bio-based value chains based on regionally sourced biomass feedstock offer interesting opportunities to meet requirements from consumers and industry in different market sectors and realise maximum benefits for the local society.
The specific challenge is to create integrated value chains with the appropriate business models to produce functional ingredients and additives.

In order to address this challenge, an Italian large company active in the food industry is coordinating a consortium of 12 European partners who are currently working to create new value chains from a production byproduct within a project proposal to be presented under Horizon 2020 Bio-based Industries Innovation Demonstration 2019 (H2020-JTI-BBI-SO3-D3 2019). The consortium currently includes companies and research institutes coming from the following countries: Italy, France, Finland, Netherlands, Spain and Belgium.
As far as the project development status is concerned, preliminary tests of the technology have already been carried out and one of the partner will be in charge of its optimization. The main end users are expected to be companies active in the food, dietary supplements, feed and cosmetics fields.

The project is expected to achieve the following results and impact:
- create at least one new cross-sector interconnection in the bio-based economy at local level;
- create at least one new bio-based value chain involving local stakeholders including farmers, food transformers and SMEs;
- demonstrate at least two new ‘consumer' products based on bio-based chemicals, ingredients and materials that meet market requirements.
To complete the consortium, the Italian company, which is the project coordinator, is now looking for an SME based in the below listed countries (including both EU Member States and Horizon 2020 Associated Countries), with proved expertise in biomass treatment through steam explosion or hydrothermal process at least at pilot scale (with a reactor size of more than 30 L). Expressions of interest issued by research institutes or universities would also be considered. Capacity to guarantee a food grade process or the availability to move to a food grade one is an essential requirement. The project is aimed at obtaining a functional ingredient for food and feed, not at producing energy.
