Summary

A Greek research team of a Greek University is looking for partners to submit a proposal under LC-SC3-EC-2-2018-2019-2020. The aim of the project is to mitigate and soothe the social and economic impacts at the phasing-out coal regions who are further vulnerable to energy poverty, due to the clean energy transition. The consortium is looking for partners mainly from the Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania that will contribute by providing a local case in the coal regions in the above countries.

Description

The Greek research team of one of the largest Greek Universities based in Northern Greece, is currently working on preparing a proposal (EnCARE) under the H2020 topic LC-SC3-EC-2-2018-2019-2020 that deals with the mitigation of household energy poverty.

It is estimated that more than 50 million households across Europe are affected by energy poverty. Energy poverty is correlated with low household income, high energy costs, and energy insufficient buildings.

Detrimental repercussions on public health and prosperity as well as on the environment are brought up on the European Commission’s Green Deal for the European Union (Dec. 2019). The Green Deal highlights the fact that all Member States should work on addressing this increasing problem of energy poverty as it is critical to ensure basic standard living for all citizens. It also points out that the clean energy transition should equally be a socially just transition.

European Union’s vision is to be the first carbon neural continent by 2050 and efforts to decarbonise the energy system and build a future proof economy are taking place. Part of the overall vision is in the EU coal regions. In this respect, the main objective of the EnCARE project is to mitigate and soothe the social and economic impacts at the phasing-out coal regions who are further vulnerable to energy poverty, due to the clean energy transition.

The consortium is looking for partners mainly (but not exclusively) coming from the Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania that will contribute by providing a local case in the coal regions in the above countries. More specifically, the consortium seeks either energy agencies or research institutes with expertise in energy efficiency, renewable energy sources and energy poverty with contacts in the phasing-out coal regions of Hungary, Czech Republic and Romania and/or phasing-out coal Region or Municipalities (mainly) in the above countries.
