Summary

A French University is looking for industrial partners from the material analysis sector or the heritage field to join consortium on MSCA-ITN-2020 Call. This project seeks to set up the first European multidisciplinary and innovative plaster network around casts dating back to the Renaissance all the way to the 20th century. Partners would host a PhD student for 1-3 months and provide research training: all costs would be funded by the project.

Description

The Consoritum which leads this Gallery project seeks to set up the first European multidisciplinary and innovative plaster network around casts dating back to the Renaissance all the way to the 20th century. At present, these heritages can be endangered by their environment, corrupted by the trafficking of art works, and forgotten because of a lack of knowledge about their cultural messages. 



The Gallery project has 5 main objectives:



1. Training students and helping them to achieve a high level of multidisciplinary skills for significant employability and attractiveness.

2. Bringing high-level expertise on the development and characterisation of materials using the example of plaster.

3. Studying old plaster casts to put forward renovation protocols and bring innovations in the development of new materials that meet current requirements in terms of, for example, resistance, durability, or adaptability to the environment. 

4. Developing necessary reliable authentication tools required by the art market and professionals to detect forgeries. 

5. Establishing a new kind of museology and developing educational tools to better showcase public works of art.



The Gallery network will hire and train 14 PhD students around Europe. The students will be hosted for 1-3 months by associated partners. During these secondments, they will receive research training to enrich their experience in their field of work. Secondments to academic partners and museums are already planned. 

The consortium is now seeking new industrial partners to host PhD students in the following fields:

- Characterisation of the constituent plaster materials / origin of raw materials

- Patina, polychromy on initial surfaces %26 alteration, cleaning and surface treatment

- Dating and authentication of artworks

- Data learning and management, and economic value

Call deadline is 14 January 2020

Project is expected to start by the end of 2020/early 2021.

Advantages and Innovations

The Gallery project will support 14 PhD theses around a complex, multiform and “multi-tasking” material which has been used for thousands of years but which will be approached in a completely different way from traditional material science research by:



- drawing on old heritage materials, their chemical, mechanical and mineralogical properties 

- studying their deterioration in various environments

- conceiving restauration protocols

- discovering the secrets of their use to better understand and innovate with today's materials

- developing new types of plaster that meet current industrial requirements and processes such as 3D printing.



Gallery will meet museums' needs by:

- providing innovative tools that guarantee the authenticity of works and detect forgeries

- improving the dating of works

- facilitating conservation by putting forward diagnostic tools and restoration protocols.

- and thus improving the access to these works in museums.



Gallery will also meet the needs of plaster industries by providing materials with specific mechanical, chemical, and environmental properties adapted to new industrial uses.



Gallery will offer truly multidisciplinary doctoral training. This will be achieved especially by organising schools and workshops with key figures from the business, science and museum worlds. It will help give them all the tools they need to become managers with a rare and sought-after professional profile, adapted to posts in research laboratories or industries dealing with innovative, inexpensive, recyclable materials that can be adapted to environmental constraints.

The French University is now seeking industrial partners from the material analysis sector or the heritage field which can host a PhD student for 1-3 months in the following fields:

- Patina, polychromy on initial surfaces & alteration, cleaning and surface treatment

- Dating and authentication of artworks

- Data learning and management, and economic value



The salary, accommodation and administration fees will be funded by the H2020 programme: partners will not have to pay out anything.



Partners are expected to offer research training to the PhD students during the secondments. They can also participate to the Gallery training events in suggesting speakers, providing training on non-transferable skills (communication, intellectual property rights, etc), participating in job fairs and other project-related activities.



The partners would join a large network of academics, private organisations and museums in 7 different countries. 



Targeted countries in priority are Austria, Italy, Portugal, the Netherlands, Greece, Romania, Germany. But  applications are also welcomed from other H2020 eligible countries.
