Horizon-CL5-2021-D2-01-11. A Spanish university is looking for a large intensive CO2 producer company to test a pilot demonstrator.

Country of Origin: Spain
Reference Number: RDES20210907001
Publication Date: 7 September 2021

Summary

A Spanish university and a technological centre with experience in primary direct air CO2 capture are preparing a proposal under the call HORIZON-CL5-2021-D2-01-11: Direct atmospheric carbon capture and conversion. The aim of the project is to demonstrate membrane contactors capture and immediate electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 to carbonates/bicarbonates as valuable products. They are looking for a large intensive CO2 producer company willing to test a pilot demonstrator.

Description

The use of membrane contactors has shown high efficiency and speed for CO2 capture, even applied directly to air. By means of polymeric membranes and alkaline absorbent solutions, the capture of CO2 and its immediate transformation into carbonates / bicarbonates also has a very low energy and economic cost.
Subsequent conversion of carbonates / bicarbonates, without prior treatment, in electrolyzers can yield valuable products as energy vectors, such as methanol, formic acid (or formates), formaldehyde, or carbon monoxide. This step can be carried out using relatively inexpensive zinc or copper based catalysts, for example.
This proposal aims to scale up this technology for its eventual implementation in large industrial facilities. Experimental results will be obtained to obtain a solid basis for its potential, and the costs and environmental impact of its eventual start-up will also be estimated.
CONSORTIUM: Within the consortium, there are already involved universities and technological centres, which will provide the technological solution and the estimation of the costs and the environmental impact.
PARTNER SEARCH: The Catalan Coordinator is looking for a large industry partner interested in reducing the CO2 production to validate the project results. Particularly, the university is seeking a large company to scale up the technology for its eventual implementation in large industrial facilities
CALL/TOPIC CONDITIONS:
Topic: HORIZON-CL5-2021-D2-01-11: Direct atmospheric carbon capture and conversion.
The official deadline for the call: October 19th, 2021.
Type of action: Research and Innovation Action (RIA)
Model: Single Stage
Deadline for Expression of interest: 24th of September 2021
Anticipated duration of the project: 48 months

Advantages and Innovations

In the framework of this project, the consortium will propose a new technological option combining direct atmospheric carbon capture and conversion in a single step.

This proposal aims to scale up this technology for its eventual implementation in large industrial facilities. Experimental results will be obtained to obtain a solid basis for its potential, and the costs and environmental impact of its eventual start-up will also be estimated
