PRIMA 2020: Looking for farmers cooperatives, food producers, university agricultural departments and agricultural centers from Israel, Tunisia, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan and Morocco.

Country of Origin: Spain
Reference Number: RDES20200213003
Publication Date: 14 February 2020

Summary

A Spanish institute dedicated to solar energy is preparing a project proposal to the PRIMA 2020 call. The project will integrate a farming irrigation system and post-processing treatment of food for final consumption using innovative plasma technologies through Plasma Activated Water (PAW). The centre looks for partners among university agricultural departments, farmer’s cooperatives and food producers, from Israel, Tunisia, Turkey, Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon or Morocco.

Description

A Spanish institute working in concentration photovoltaics systems and a young startup devoted to plasma technologies are preparing a project proposal to be presented to PRIMA 2020 call (Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area).

The aim of the project is to develop an integrated irrigation system for farming and post-processing treatment of food for final consumption. The device pumps underground water to the surface, desalinates, fertilizes it with atmospheric air plasma and finally delivers the Plasma Activated Water (PAW), a clear and fertilized water, to the farm by a drip irrigation system. Once the crop will have been raised, the same system will be used to disinfect and extend the durability of food in the market. The system will work only with solar energy and can be installed in small or large farms thanks to its modular design. Its technology involves solar electrical energy generation, water desalting, atmospheric plasma activation of water, smart irrigation and final product disinfection by PAW. Moreover, the device obtains drinking water as part of the process that will be also usable for the farmer. (See attached image). The system includes solar energy generator, pumping, desalination and PAW unit.

The consortium is looking for cooperatives of farmers and food producers, university agricultural departments, agricultural cooperatives, agricultural research centers (non-profit and/or profit), to complete the consortium.

The partners sought will be involved in the definition of final profile of the system and will participate on the practical design oriented to final user, conceptual development of the trial program, practical development of the trial facilities and conduction of the trial program.

The eligible partners are from third countries associated to Horizon 2020 (Israel, Tunisia and Turkey) or Third Countries not associated to Horizon 2020 (TC), having concluded international agreements for scientific and technological cooperation setting out the terms and conditions of their participation in PRIMA: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Morocco.

EOI deadline: 20 March, 2020.
Call deadline: 01 April, 2020.
Anticipated duration of the project: 48 months.

Advantages and Innovations

Plasma Activated Water (PAW) is one of the most promising technologies to improve the food production because it increases the shelf life and quality attributes of the fresh products. Plasma technologies have demonstrated their potential for agricultural production in many different aspects, including the chemical and biological decontamination of processing tools and packaging, the cleaning of air and water, and the production of fertilizers. Moreover, based on the scientific research available, PAW can be a powerful and useful tool for the enhancement of seed germination and promote the plant growth. The formation of nitrogen species like nitrates in PAW is mainly responsible for the plant growth as it serves as nutrient. The PAW also has the ability to inhibit the hormones responsible for seed dormancy and stimulate the growth. PAW is an eco-friendly growth promoter and disinfectant solution that can be used during the full food chain from the farming process to the final product enhancement.
