H2020 CE-SC5-07-2018-2019-2020: Searching for British or Russian universities with experience in metallurgical and electromagnetic analysis and Dutch, German or Turkish companies experienced in recycling for alloy manufacturing

Country of Origin: Spain
Reference Number: RDES20181121002
Publication Date: 21 November 2018

Summary

Spanish technology centre seeks partners for an H2020 CE-SC5-07-2018-2019-2020 bid to refine aluminium alloys from scrap recycling and increase the use of secondary sources to obtain primary quality alloys. Partners sought are British or Russian universities experienced in metallurgy and electromagnetic analysis, simulation, design and manufacture and Dutch, German or Turkish companies experienced in purification cell development and commercialization and recycling for alloy manufacture.

Description

Securing the sustainable access to raw materials, including metals and particularly critical raw materials (CRM), is of high importance for the European economy. The challenge for industry is to scale up promising raw materials production technologies and to demonstrate that raw materials can be produced in an innovative and sustainable way in order to make sure that research and innovation end up on the market.

The expected impact of addressing the new challenges, is to increase measurably the efficiency and effectiveness (range, yield, quality and selectivity of recovered materials) of the exploitation of complex and heterogeneous secondary raw materials deposits ('urban mines')

A Spanish technological research centre, working in the fields of materials and processes, has formed an initial consortium for the specific topic. The consortium formed is experienced in metal alloys, industrial processes, recycling and life cycle assessment (LCA) of products.

The project will intend to foster the scrap recycling by introducing a breakthrough technology to the market: a technology that will enable refining aluminium alloys and thus, using much more secondary sources to obtain primary quality alloys. This will not only put Europe at the forefront of the most sustainable circular aluminium value chain worldwide, it will also reduce the scrap exports, keeping this valuable material and energy resources within Europe.

The Spanish centre is looking:
- for universities, in United Kingdom and Russia, with knowledge and expertise related with metallurgical studies in aluminium alloys and electromagnetic analysis and simulation, design and simulation of industrial processes, especially those ones directly linked with the metal productive industry.

- for companies, in The Netherlands, Germany and Turkey, with expertise in aluminium foundry and auxiliary equipment, purification cell development and commercialization and recycling for alloy manufacturing.

The type of the partnership considered is the research cooperation agreement.

Funding programme: H2020
Topic: CE-SC5-07-2018-2019-2020 - Raw materials innovation for the circular economy: sustainable processing, reuse, recycling and recovery schemes
Expected duration: 36 months
The deadline for the 1st stage project submission is 19/02/2019
The deadline for EOIs in this profile is 14 December 2018.

Advantages and Innovations

This project will develop a novel and disruptive technology to address the up cycling of secondary aluminium alloys, making the European aluminium value chain sustainable.
Aluminium is a critical material in terms of market, jobs, and sustainability. The project will make the European aluminium value chain more sustainable by reducing the primary raw material needs, the energy consumptions and the residues generation.
