Chromate free smart release corrosion inhibitor technology seeks application partnerships within paints/primers and coatings sector.

Country of Origin: United Kingdom

Publication Date: 3 May 2018

A UK SME working in the field of environmentally responsive coatings, has developed a smart release ‘on demand' corrosion inhibitor technology delivering superior performance and regulatory benefits. The technology offers a chromate free surface coating suited to aerospace/aircraft and automotive applications. They seek partnerships under a commercial agreement with technical assistance with organisations where long term corrosion protection is a fundamental requirement.

Corrosion protection of metallic surfaces is fundamental across a wide range of sectors, including: the construction of industrial, commercial and domestic buildings; aerospace and aircraft; and the automotive industry.

The use of chromium based substances for anti-corrosion applications has been constrained due to the health implications (recognised as a human carcinogen possessing mutagenic and teratogenic properties) and environmental impact (bio-accumulative). European REACH legislation (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) will ban the use of Hexavalent Chromium based substances across the EU from 2019. Where the use of such substances are permitted through inclusion on the authorisation list of SVHCs (Substances of Very High Concern) within Annex XIV of REACH, their use in the European Economic Area (EEA) will be prohibited after the relevant sunset date unless authorisation is held by the user or an upstream supplier. Many substances within ‘authorisation applications' have an imminent sunset date of 22 January 2019.

Whilst more environmentally acceptable (Chromate-free) corrosion inhibitor coatings are available, they are typically based on sparingly soluble phosphate salts and are invariably less effective than chromate based products.

Developed from research at a leading UK university this UK company has made a significant breakthrough in the development of a chromate free corrosion inhibitor which is more effective and environmentally acceptable than existing inhibitors. The inhibitor provides advanced corrosion control through its smart ‘on demand' technology, where it is released from the coating as and when it is needed i.e. following surface damage.

The coating may be applied to a metal substrate as part of a coating system, such that other materials or additives may be provided in the coating and/or additional coating layers may be applied to the substrate. As such, the coating may be considered a primer.
Commercial agreements with any associated technical assistance are sought to develop commercial applications and to support routes to new markets through:
• Formulation within new coating applications for the aerospace/aircraft, automotive and transport sectors.
• Product testing and evaluation within new coating applications
• Substitution of incumbent environmentally unacceptable surface coatings

Partnerships across other applications are welcome where an environmentally preferred corrosion inhibitor is required.
It is envisaged that commercial agreements will be formed which may include aspects of technical cooperation required to commercialise within new paint/coating applications.

Advantages and Innovations

The primary advantages relate to manufacturing and supply chain health benefits and related regulatory compliance. Additional advantages include:
• Reduced costs of protecting against, inspecting for, and repairing corrosion
• Active coating which responds when a coating is damaged
• Compliance with the long term corrosion requirements of the industry
• Compatibility with existing coatings systems – i.e. as a sacrificial coating such as zinc or zinc alloy on galvanised steel, providing improved corrosion resistance to the underlying steel
• Outperforms hexavalent chromate inhibitors in laboratory tests.

Stage Of Development

Already on the market

Requested partner

Partnerships are sought with paint/pigment/coating industries particularly within high value sectors including:
• Aerospace/aviation coatings
• Construction - roofing, exterior cladding
• Automotive paints
• Petrochemical, oil and gas
• Consumer goods – white goods

It is anticipated that through a commercial agreement with any required technical cooperation, partners will support ant necessary technical aspects of the product commercialisation within new paint/coating applications. This is likely to include tasks such as:
• Formulation development within new coating applications
• Product efficacy testing and evaluation
