Eco-friendly sunlight activated larvicide to control mosquito borne diseases

Country of Origin: Singapore
Reference Number: TOSG20190904001
Publication Date: 4 September 2019

Summary

A Singapore institute has developed a novel eco-friendly larvicide which kills Aedes mosquito larvae to help combat mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, malaria and zika. When activated by sunlight, the plant-derived larvicide generates free radicals that are highly lethal to larvae. The safer, cheaper and more targeted mosquito killing solution provides a sustainable solution to other methods such as fogging.

The institute seeks technical cooperation with MNEs/SMEs of all sizes.

Description

Mosquito-borne disease such as dengue, malaria and zika have become a severe public health issue with nearly 700 million people being infected each year, resulting in greater than one million deaths globally. The annual economic cost of dengue illness in Asia is estimated at US$2 billion, excluding the costs of preventive and vector control efforts.

The novel larvicide targets mosquito larvae instead of adult mosquitoes, attacking the pest before it reaches the adult stage and before it is able to spread disease. Activated by sunlight, the larvicide generates free radicals that are highly lethal to larvae, with laboratory tests showing an Aedes mosquito kill rate of almost 100%. The plant-derived solution is furthermore harmless to other aquatic animals as sunlight can only penetrate through a translucent organism such as the mosquito larvae to activate the larvicide.

The larvicide is a green and sustainable alternative to existing solutions such as fogging. The pesticides used in fogging kill mosquito predators along with mosquitos. Being neurotoxins, fogging also runs the risk of causing adverse side effects in humans. Furthermore, the larvicide's multi-targeted killing mechanism does not cause resistance to emerge through continuous use, making it a more sustainable solution.

Addressing the challenge of increasing mosquito populations in tropical countries, the eco-friendly organic larvicide is a sustainable alternative capable of reducing the number of Aedes mosquitos and the spread of mosquito-borne diseases globally.

The institute is keen to partner industry players including MNEs or SMEs of all sizes to commercialise this technology through a technical transfer partnership.

Advantages and Innovations

The larvicide features the following advantages and innovations:

- Eco-friendly and organic
- Plant-derived and natural
- Sunlight-activated
- Multi-targeted killing mechanism with no emergence of resistance from continuous use

Cost-effective and sustainable, the larvicide is lethal to mosquito larvae at a very low concentration thus a very little amount will be required for it to be effective. The solution is furthermore projected to reduce 50% in man hours spent on mosquito fogging.

Requested partner

The Singapore research seeks to partner industry players (SMEs of all sizes or MNEs) through technical cooperation.

The partner could be an industry player in the environment or personal care industry to commercialise this technology to offer it to its customer segments.
