A Dutch tech-startup, combining maritime research and experience, has developed a fuel efficiency service for seagoing ships. The company uses big data based predictive models to provide insight on fuel saving opportunities. Savings up to 20% on fuel consumption have been proven. Recommendations vary from aspects of operation to the configuration of propulsion. The company is looking for owners, of short sea and deep sea ships for commercial agreements with technical assistance.


Greening of shipping is one of the most important challenges for the shipping sector, both from the aspect of environment as of cost saving. Data collection aboard, the increased availability of ship to shore communication technology and all kind of (open) data sources e.g. on weather and ship position provide new opportunities. 

This Dutch tech start-up with roots in maritime research and operations has combined these developments with own advanced algorithms and energy models providing accurate estimations of potential fuel savings.

The two entrepreneurs behind this tech-startup company share over a decade of maritime experience, in the propulsion industry, predictive modelling and research / consultancy. In 2016 they founded this startup and they already built an impressive list of references from ship owners, designers and equipment manufacturers.

The company focusses on fuel reduction for seagoing ships, applying detailed data analysis of all aspects of the operation of these ships, using Big Data and simulation technology. The simulation model is based on information about the (propulsion) systems that operate aboard, data that was collected aboard and sent to shore and the enrichment of these data with other sources, such as weather conditions, waves heights, currents and wind. By means of the companies algorithms and energy models, the data collected is transferred into useful management information.

In pilot projects it has been proven that this technology can substantially cut fuel costs. After upgrades based on the recommendations from this technology, savings up to 20% have been realized. Both the economical and the ecological aspect of shipping operations improved significantly.

The company offers this technology in the framework of a service contract for a fixed monthly fee, and consists of a periodical evaluation of the usage of the ship or fleet and the saving possibilities. In these consulting sessions full transparency is provided on the parameters influencing fuel usage. Objective is to improve the client’s understanding of and know-how about the impact of operational choices as well as choices in the propulsion configuration. Evidence based advice on scenario’s and next steps for improvement is provided including fuel saving calculation and a financial business case.

This technology is interesting for ship owners to optimize operations, but the technology also offers opportunities to naval architects (designers) and maritime equipment suppliers calculating the fuel saving potential of their proposed ship modifications (refit). The simulation model offers the opportunity to quickly evaluate several alternative systems, based on the model that contains the big data about all different kind of systems in different kind of configurations.

The company is looking for owners, designers and suppliers of short sea and deep sea ships sailing in the Emission Control Areas (ECA) to provide this service and transfer the knowledge, within the framework of a commercial agreement with technical assistance.



Advantages and Innovations

In comparison with  the prevailing fuel saving solutions, the innovation is that data from different sources is combined with operational data and systems data in a smart way using advanced energy models. These models enable the correction of measured data for weather conditions, which is crucial for fleet benchmarking . For naval architects and maritime equipment suppliers the technology has the advantage that on the basis of operational data from the ship, modifications on the ship can  easily be calculated to verify their fuel saving benefits. 

Another advantage is that the service is offered in combination with a subscription to the online data platform for a ‘do-it-yourself’ component on obtaining insight for ship owners. Eventually with a larger number of ships in the online database, the opportunity to benchmark ships will arise.
