Summary

An Italian SME, active in industrial and environmental instrumentation and monitoring, developed an innovative system for remote odor emissions sampling & air quality monitoring, performing the tasks needed for public surveillance, as timely activation to get air samples and check them against threshold concentration limits. Research cooperation agreement with Public Entities and/or Commercial agreement with technical assistance are needed for finalising and testing the product.

Description

An Italian SME, active in industrial and environmental instrumentation and monitoring, developed a system for remote odor emissions sampling & air quality monitoring, complying with public surveillance duties and advantageous compared to present solutions.
Odor emissions are considered the main cause of disturbance noticed by citizens living near industrial and agricultural facilities. Continuous exposure to aerial substances may lead to insomnia, nausea, headache, difficulty in breathing and debilitation. The collection of meaningful air samples is subject to difficulties: low and fluctuating concentrations, their rapid dispersion and decay with time, the need to have low "false positives" and low number of samples, to reduce burden and costs. A solution is to trigger the sampling operation "on-demand" by combining sensorial approach and advanced sensor technology, at the exact time that citizens or the environmental authorities in charge or the sensors network ask for activation of the sampling process through remote warnings. After the sample is taken, authorized entities can bring the samples to accredited laboratories for chemical / olfactometric analysis.
Recurring odor complaints may (or may not) reflect a real problem. But complaints can induce higher costs for industrial settlements and even lead to shutdown of facilities, since negative publicity and media attention forces local or national authorities to respond, limiting, dumping or even stopping such activities. The proposed sampling system and air quality monitoring is particularly useful in such critical situations. Its implementation provides unbiased quantitative responses that act in several ways: 1) helping the industrial sectors in identifying leaks or plants malfunction in due time and take remedies, 2) calming the population about fear of overdoses when they do not exists, 3) helping authorities in performing their control task in the most effective way and at low costs.
The technology follows European (EN13725) and International standards about the odor harassments.
Commercial agreement with technical assistance and/or research cooperation agreement are needed for finalising and testing the whole system. Partnerships with local public authorities can support the implementation of the system in real life critical cases, while partnerships with research bodies can help in statistical analyses and tuning up of the system.

Advantages and Innovations

The proposed system seamlessly integrates several technology fields (cellphone network, ICT, Web, industrial control and actuation, air sampling and measurements) in order to provide a turn key solution for air monitoring & sampling, particularly for application raising public concerns, social impact and public authorities' responsibility for air pollution threshold respect and surveillance.
Further developments are under course, thanks to the financial support given by Horizon 2020 SME Instrument R&I Program.
Here below the main advantages of the technology:
1. On-demand odour emissions sampling system.
2. Real-time air quality monitoring.
3. Trigger system able to collect people and sensors warning for the activation of the sampling.
4. On-going chemical and olfactometric samples ready to be analysed by equipped laboratories.
The system is designed in compliance to the Quality Standards for "Determination Of the concentration of odors by dynamic olfactometry" (UNI EN 13725:2004).

Stage Of Development Comment

The integrated network system is presently at an advanced development stage TRL8 and CRL2. It is able to match the needs of different field applications, as it has been already demonstrated by previous (although less developed) network systems built by the company and under operation so far.

Requested partner

The technology follows European (EN13725) and International standards about the odor harassments.
The main goal, at the present stage, is to realize reference cases with the support of local public authorities (mainly local and national authorities appointed to ensure/enforce air quality standards) for the validation of the methodology.
Expressions of interest are welcomed from Universities and Research Institutes in order to organize and schedule scientific studies concerning the long-term testing of the proposed innovation.
