A Croatian company offers an energy efficient remote body temperature measuring device under license agreement and commercial agreement with technical assistance

Country of Origin: Croatia
Reference Number: TOHR20180521001
Publication Date: 22 May 2018

Summary

A small Croatian company, active in the field of electrical engineering, computing, and information and communication technology, developed a prototype of a device for continuous remote body temperature monitoring. The advanced technology consists of the wireless transfer of information to the central node via the human body. The company is interested in partnership under license agreement and commercial agreement with technical assistance.

Description

A Croatian company in the field of electrical engineering, computing, and information and communication technology (ICT), established in 2015, offers a prototype system developed by a team of experts in the technological area of wireless analogue signal acquisition.
This system is intended for continuous monitoring of body temperature using wireless transfer of information to the central node via the human body.
Similar devices currently available on the market have sensors that are large or unwieldy and perform measurements in intervals. Many of them offer Cloud or social components, which increases the data security risk. Also, the body sensors market is at a very early stage and the most commonly commercialised sensors so far have been heart rate monitoring belts.
The system for measuring body temperature offered by the company is technologically more advanced than the competition. It has better properties than the existing short-distance wireless transfer technology, reduced manufacturing price and higher efficiency in measuring rapidly changing variables and continuous simultaneous monitoring. Furthermore, this device has a great market potential. Because of its small dimensions, the product is eligible for the wearables market and the Internet of Things field.
The system is composed of a sensor paired with a bracelet and a mobile application.
The key components for making this product are the electronic parts of the bracelet and the sensors, a rubber or plastic bracelet, a case for the sensor and a self-adhesive patch.
The sensor is attached to the body with a patch and communicates with the bracelet via wireless communication technology, using the human body (skin) as a medium. The bracelet receives information from multiple measuring sensors on the same body and stores it temporarily. It transfers the information to a mobile application via Bluetooth. Although the bracelet does not have a display, it is equipped with a LED indicator, the purpose of which is to signal elevated body temperature. Additionally, through the mobile application, the system provides the possibility of setting an alarm in case of deviations from the preferred body temperature level. The mobile application features a visual user interface that displays the data. Also, the application sends the information to a web server, which provides the user with the ability to manage the information.
This product is intended to be used by parents for measuring the children’s body temperature. The sensor is attached under the child’s armpit with the patch, while the bracelet can be worn on their wrist. The parent can continuously monitor the child’s body temperature through the mobile application. Additionally, the bracelet can be worn by the parent, in which case the information is displayed when the parent touches the child.
The company plans to continue developing this technology further, so in the future there would be multiple sensors, measuring other biological parameters of the body, which could be connected to the existing central node (bracelet) by using the protected technology. With these sensors, the company would gain access to other markets (manufacturing sports accessories and equipment).
In order to manufacture the product and place it on the international market, the company offers its innovative system to companies that are already manufacturing and selling complementary products, chipsets manufacturers, original equipment manufacturers, smartwatch and smartphone manufacturers, manufacturers of digital thermometers and medical devices, and companies connected with end users (parents) under license agreement or commercial agreement with technical assistance. The cooperation would be realised through manufacturing or supplying key components and joint presence on the market (e.g. selling sensors that would be compatible with bracelets or other wearable devices made by the partner).

Advantages and Innovations

With the body sensors market still being at an early stage, this innovative technology has a great potential for success and further development.
As opposed to similar devices available on the market, this device does not use Bluetooth to communicate between the sensor and the receiver. Instead, it operates at lower frequencies by transmitting narrow pulses that do not expose the body to radiation, which makes this product energy efficient and suitable for continuous monitoring of analogue signals. Also, by using Bluetooth, similar devices can connect to another user’s bracelet and thus provide incorrect data. This problem does not exist when transferring signals through the body.
Due to reduced system complexity and lower power consumption, this device is of small dimensions, has a lower manufacturing price than the competition, and a longer battery life. In addition, the battery can be replaced and the device can be used over and over again.
Because of its small dimensions, this system is easy to use and suitable for continuous monitoring of body temperature. Additionally, the mobile application enables setting an alarm in case of deviations from preferred body temperature levels.
The system also provides the user with the ability to analyse the information by using the mobile application and web interface, where all the information is stored.
Furthermore, the system allows multiple body sensors to be connected to a single bracelet (e.g. sensor for monitoring: heart rate, breathing, physical activity level, stress level), which provides the opportunity to measure multiple biological parameters of the body at the same time.
