French Technology Transfer Office proposes a new method for testing the toxicity of the water with a luminescent biosensor

Summary

The French TTO (Technology Transfer Office) is acting on behalf of an established public laboratory of the Paris region that has developed a new and green method to test the water toxicity thanks to a microalga . The efficiency of the process has been demonstrated. The French public research centre is looking for partners for a technical cooperation or a research cooperation agreement.

Description

The French TTO (Technology Transfer Office) is acting on behalf of an established public laboratory of the leading French scientific based in the Paris region. 

It is estimated that the water quality market will reach 3.5 billions dollars between now and 2019. A principal factor of marine environment degradation is the presence of polluants in the ecosystem.

The organisms are exposed to hydrocarbons, heavy metals, antifouling biocides, pesticides, and the ecological impact can be irreversible. It is urgent to create toxicity tests which are eco-friendly to evaluate the impact of various chemicals on the ecosystem.

European regulations aim towards more and more accurate thresholds of micro-pollutant detection.
The physico-chemical tests on the market do not have adapted thresholds.

This technology can be applied in several ways:
- detection of heavy metals
- detection of herbicides
- water toxicity testing (antifouling biocides, hydrocarbons, copper, oil...)
- detection of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs)

The French TTO is able to provide technical and legal assistance to facilitate the eventual partnership. In case of business potential, the prototype can be partially funded by the TTO.

The partner sought could be a university or a company interested in a research cooperation agreement or in a technical cooperation agreement .

Advantages and Innovations

This technology is:

-quick and accurate (detection between 2 and 3 µg/L depending on the pollutant)
- reproducible via a protocol frequently used in laboratory (more than 2000 mutants generated ) thanks to fast-growing alga
- cheap (no need to buy consumables)

This new method is useful thanks to a automated device for high troughput measurement of luminescence under standardized conditions (360 samples in parallel) and presents a huge potential for screening other toxic compounds than antifouling biocides and herbicides.

A specific line of this algae could be developed to counteract a particular micro-pollutant.

A proof of concept has been validated on herbicides, endocrine disruptors, copper and hydrocarbons and tests are in development for  iron. 

The tests can only be carried out in a lab not in situ.

This reliable laboratory approach has already been tested in the Japanese coastal areas, United-Kingdom waters and in the French Mediterranean sea.

The partner sought could be a university or a company interested in a research cooperation agreement or a technical cooperation agreement. 
This offer targets entreprises involved in the analysis and quality of water.
The partner should have a clear industrial application in mind, and should have a strong technical background to co-develop the product with the laboratory.
