New district heating strategies to improve energy performance.

Country of Origin: Spain

A Spanish energy services company specialised in district heating networks seeks partners to jointly further deepen knowledge of it and to improve the performance, efficiency and reliability, of district heating networks. Partners interested in creating/retrofitting new or existing district heating networks under services, technical or research cooperation agreement are sought.

A Spanish energy service company is specialized in offering solutions related to optimized resource management. This company designs and provides water, waste and energy management solutions that contribute to the sustainable development of communities and industries. One of the main fields of activity is the design and management of district heating networks, where important competences have been acquired.

Low efficiency in existing district heating networks, is a fact that needs to be issued. This problem implies energy wasting, which leads to an increase of the costs of operation. The other main issue in which existing district heating networks are involved is the emission of greenhouse gases, as they decrease the air quality and are strongly pursued by public entities.

Several measures can be implemented in order to mitigate those issues. The introduction of renewable energy sources, as biomass or solar energy, helps to soften both problems easily. Other active measures that raise the energy performance are the improvement of the control system and the installation of modern thermostats and control valves. There are also important passive measures that allow the achievement of a better performance in the installation, as the improvement of the thermal insulation in buildings and pipelines.

The main applications for this technology are groups of buildings placed physically close to each other where the installation or renovation of a district heating network is feasible. This includes residential districts, public buildings, university campuse or a combination of several of those.

The company is interested in technical co-operation agreement in order to develop the technology that is currently being used in modern district heating networks. This agreement will lead to a growth of knowledge for both companies involved, which would imply a better understanding of the existing technology and, therefore, an improvement of the technology itself.

A research co-operation agreement is also considered. By this agreement, the companies involved will merge efforts in order to further understand the technology and how this could be improved. Consequently, it will help to develop new original and more efficient solutions for the problems exposed above.

With a services agreement, the company plans to carry out the necessary interventions to implement the solutions into specific buildings or districts so both the company and the partner or partners benefit from the agreement.

Advantages and Innovations

The main advantages are the use of renewable energy sources, the improvement of the control system, the installation of modern thermostats and control valves and the improvement of the thermal insulation in pipelines.

The use of renewable energy sources has two main benefits: a reduction in the cost of the energy produced and a reduction in the emissions of greenhouse gasses. This second benefit makes this technology even more atractive, as the reduction of emissions might make the project applicable for public grants, so the cost of the implementation would be more affordable.

The renovation of an existing district heating or the creation of a new one will improve the performance of the installation instantly, as the obsolete equipment used (boilers, pumps, valves, control system, etc.) would be replaced with current technology.

The use of smart thermostats and smart energy meters are other important aspects of these projects. This way, the temperature of each room can be controlled independently and the energy consumed by each radiator can be registered, which opens up the possibility to implement individual billing.
