Summary

A research group of a Spanish technology center that offers electronic advanced technology services has developed and patented a method and an electronic device with multi-agent fuzzy control for detecting lateral cerebral stroke (ictus) in real time. The research and development (R&D) center is looking for partners as non-profit entities, hospitals and patients associations for testing the new device and further developments, through technical cooperation agreements.

Description

A Spanish technology center, that offers advanced technology services since 1989, has developed and patented a multi-agent electronic device and method with diffuse control, which can assist in the detection of lateral cerebral strokes (cerebrovascular accidents), specifically by detecting one of the main symptoms thereof: the lack of mobility in the half of the body opposite the location of the stroke. It is the beginning of the hemiplegia. This bodily disorder is characterized by paralysis in the lateral half of the body, so this is detected by analyzing the acceleration and angular velocity in each upper limb.
With this solution, the detection of the stroke (ictus) is done by two means of electronic capture, acceleration and speed angular movements in the limbs, adapted to be placed in the upper limbs of the person.
The R&D center is sought partners as public or private hospitals, non-profit healthcare entities, and patients associations for testing activities, further developments and dissemination activities, through technical cooperation agreements, in order to improve their chances of a future commercial exploitation.

Advantages and Innovations

The main novel aspects of the development are:
- The analysis is performed by two electronic processing means: the primary evaluation is to obtain maximum modulus parameters and the secondary evaluation is to obtain the module movement means at both ends. The movement module at each end is the difference between the position vectors of two consecutive movements in the instants t and t + 1; the position vectors are calculated from the acceleration and angular velocity in each limb movements. The two electronic processing means are adapted to be placed in the upper limbs of the person.
- Generating an alarm signal, which is performed as a result of the secondary evaluation of electronic or computer means using the maximum processing module and the module moving means at each end. This measure is determined by two fuzzy controllers of the ‘mandami’ type. The probability that a stroke is occurring is calculated from the output of both drivers. Thresholds can be adjusted in terms of time period and in terms of the processing means’ parameters.
