A Catalan technology center with experience in information technologies applied to medicine, has developed a third generation telecare system which enables and improves the quality of life, security and independence of older people who are disabled or dependent. It automatically identifies abnormal situations and behaviours in real time.
Hospitals, healthcare institutions and health software providers are sought for technical cooperation agreements to perform pilot studies.


Population is aging at staggering rate. In 2020, 20% of the population will be older than 65.
Just in Spain, 1.7 million people over 65 live alone, 3 out of every 4 are women due to longer life expectancy. Nearly 1 million Spanish people are entitled to receive disability living allowance benefits.
The statistics show that people who are dependent on others prefer to receive care at home, avoiding the need to attend care centres or residences.
Despite the need for professional care, the numbers of those who actually receive it remain low. The main concern for all healthcare professionals should be to better address the individual needs of the individual. For this reason, focusing on care in the home is vital in achieving a better quality of life and personal autonomy.

A Catalan Technology center has developed a telecare solution which, compared to traditional and second-generation systems, goes a step further in automatically identifying abnormal situations and behaviors in real time. The information comes directly from the user’s home, enabling the monitoring of the routines and habits of the customer on an individual basis.

Solution at home:
- Small sensors are fitted in the house of the user. These can be placed in the following places: front door, living room, bathroom and bedrooms. Ambient information is then collected without the use of cameras or microphones. The privacy of the home is respected at all times.
- Wireless hub: A network-connected device which transmits information received by the sensors in the house to the central servers.
- Data from the sensors arrives at the server where the caregiver and other professional team members (nurses, social workers, doctors, psychologists etc.) can analyze it in real time to prevent incidents occurring. Above all it can be used to improve the physical and emotional well-being of the resident.

The sensors detect ambient parameters in the home of the user, such as light, movement, temperature, humidity, the opening of doors. They also send information regarding maintenance of the system, and can detect things such as battery level, change of position, malfunctions, etc.

Solution at cloud:
- The data from the sensors is stored in a secure way on the server so that it can accessed it via a dashboard on a webpage.
- The server structure supports an ambient intelligence module, which help in making decisions, establishing rules, setting up alarms and users etc., which make up the technology algorithm.
- The real time analysis of data received displays not only a clear overview of the habits and routines of the user, but also the activation of alarms and notifications. The aim is to offer tools to the professional that improve the level of care and the physical and emotional wellbeing of the user whilst at the same time guarding against potential safety issues.

The technology center is looking for healthcare institutions and software providers specializing in health for technical cooperation agreement to implement the technology in real environments through pilot studies.
